Thanks, I didn't know that. I thought all the AMG's had the full control. Ultimately, what is the difference between the sport exhaust we get with our AMG packaged regular GLE's and the AMG models?

Optional on the 53. Standard on the 63.

Extra cylinders on 580 and 63... different exhaust system on them. But I believe similar flap system concept, albeit fully controllabe to be open vs. the six puck's 'auto' function.

Will make pics tomorrow on 450 to determine if they open in sport vs comfort.

The 580 is not controllable, fully auto.

I think he knows that. If I understand correctly, he’s going to verify that the flaps open & close in different drive modes.

My parts shipped from RJ, hopefully do this next week. There is a coding option to keep flaps fully open all the time, but I'm not sure if I want that? Any thoughts on that option?

Raj says they are a certified MB workshop so there is no issue with warranty. I can’t say more than that but I’m going with his reputation on that one.

This is the AMG Sport Exhaust on the GLE 450. The left port has the flap which actuates 'automatically' (testing only) in comfort and sport mode. The rev hang in 'Sport Mode' makes more exhaust sound, with higher rate flow. But the open valve doesn't blast any sound or rasp like a dual mode muffler.

Seems counter productive... might reduce torque? I think its optimized for performance ... muffler simply isn't 'dual sound' or furthermore performance moded - it's just a muffler.

i agree it’s just a muffler but I never had an electronic flap on any of my previous cars (that I’m aware of) so I’m not truly sure what it does

1. supposedly heat up cats faster
2. quieter cold start
3. control sound - closed during cruise - opens during wot

Perhaps an inline switch would be preferred by some... like this one designed for E90's...

http://exhaustmeister.com/store/?mod...-988-universal

If we did not have such great sound insulation I think we would also hear the flap tinkering away as it actuates back there!

Needed for backpressure?

This is pure speculation on my part for the 167 but this is something used on other vehicles with Active Fuel Management ie Corvette C7. Flaps on the exhaust may have some impact on cylinder deactivation and maintaining correct exhaust back pressure. I would be reluctant to leave the flaps open full time in case there is some problem created by doing this.

The flaps are really only for sound aka make then louder when open. On AMG's people often manipulate the flaps for bigger sound. Renntech and others make modules for that purpose (EVM's).

This v167 sounds no different with muffler flap open. Odd but sounds certainly true in real life.

On our cars the difference in sound with open flaps is day/night and designed that way. Likewise on our non-AMG SL & S-Class. Our GLE 350 has no exhaust sound worth mentioning even if there would have been a flap..

I wonder what the diff would be with a 450 with AMG package. Says it has sports exhaust.

Just checked what MBUSA says: Sport Exhaust System - A movable flap integrated into the sport exhaust system allows for intensification of the GLE's sound experience. The acoustics can be adjusted via DYNAMIC SELECT (part of the exhaust, not the tips).

So I assume that it is designed to do exactly the same as on other cars. Open flaps for louder startup, and louder sound in sport/plus mode or if selected in Dynamic Select. The older V6 450's on the SL had a noticeable (if annoying) increase in loudness. But then those cars physically had an exhaust speaker installed in the trunk for startup only. I think the GLE450 just has a mild exhaust sound with a little bit of additional growl with open flaps. This would be much more pronounced on the AMG models with sport exhaust.

^^^ This ^^^

You can hear how a 53 sounds on this video. This is the exact same vehicle I have. The way the exhaust crackles in Sport+ is sublime. Never get tired of it.

Jump to 7:17 for the driving part:

"AMG Sport Exhaust" - Wish it had more excitement....

Simply put the 450 open and closed flap produces no big difference in sound output. Absolutely NO crackles or pops. (Note, I own one.)

I own a few V8s (with longtubes). This vehicle is dedicated to luxury, not performance. Move to the V8 and the performance focus is palatable.

I think the 450 sounds pretty good as is. I mean it's an SUV after all. I wouldn't want to hear the exhaust all the time, especially when cruising at highway speeds. But at lower speeds, it growls nicely.

As much as I like a growly engine, I totally agree. You can still hear it in the cabin when you drive a bit more aggressively as well but cruising on the highway for a couple of hours is nice and pleasing.

Point is it could have had a "dual mode" muffler. The Sport Exhaust seemed to imply this was the setup from the factory with the flaps.

It is certainly a boulevard cruiser... but for $80k maybe it's not too much to ask?
