Long term ownership

Thinking of getting a 2022 GLE450 or a fully loaded 2019 GLS 450 with only 9k kilometers in the motor. I own a 2014 ML350 and have zero problems with the car. The battery problem on the gle is making me think twice and just stick to the tried and true robust system of the old fashioned petrol engine. I will be keeping the car at least 7 years so reliability is a must. What do you guys think?

Would you consider purchasing a GLE 350 loaded, perhaps less potential issues .

I don't think it will work based on how I use the truck. I always load up the ML350 to the max. During summertime the truck will be stuffed with 4 passengers, 3-70lb electric bikes and 100lbs of gears. Winter time 5 passengers and ton of winter gear. The trunk always goes up to the mountains with a heavy load and I think having the 4 cylinder engine is a big downgrade from the 302hp that the old truck has.

After 18 months and 15,000 miles, my loaded 2020 GLE 350 remains trouble free. The battery problems you refer to are rare and should be solved on the 2022 model.

I always buy a ELW on my MBs and they always pay off. On my ML the air suspension replacement after 6 months past factory warranty literally paid for itself. If the ELW will cover the battery then potentially yes I will go for it but from what I am digging on the ELW coverage it looks like it is not covered.

As TwinCam says, the battery issue is a limited duration one; 31 months and 22k miles here and rock solid. I did get ELW, but mainly for concern of the E-ABC system, but that is fine, too.

We came from a ‘15 GLK 350, same engine as your ML, and into a ‘21 GLE 350. You really can notice the difference and if I could wait to 2022 for delivery then ordering a 450 would have made sense. Not that the 350 is slow, it gets up and goes when you ask it to, but it’s not the smooth torquey delivery that the old V6 was and my impression is it’ll struggle if loaded up. In your case from your comments the 450 does seem the right way to go.

…. if possible, I would not keep a Mercedes’ longer than the Warranty , and an Extended Warranty. Things can happen due to time…. very expensive things !

With that kind of load, you are probably over the approximately 1,100 pound payload!

But you'll be surprised at the performance of the "little" four cylinder, compared to the old lazy V6. Below 90mph, there's less difference between the new straight six and the four, at least at 5,000 - 10,000 ft elevation where I drive.

The four should "feel" more punchy, since they both have the same torque, 273, but the 350 gets it at 3,500rpm, and the four gets there at only 1,800rpm. Nice engine.
