GLE 350 de hybrid - Charging 7.2kw!!

Hi, I recently took delivery of the GLE 350de in the UK. It was advertised as being able to charge at home at 7.4kw with its onboard AC system. I plug it in using a 7.4kw capable charger and it only charges at 3.6kw max! The same is true for public chargers (except rapid chargers).

It seems that the only way to reach 7.4kw is by completely rewiring your house electrics to phase 3 wiring which no house in the UK has.

Can anyone help with this? I don’t understand at all why it has to be phase 3, when my other electric car is fine on a single phase set up and gets 7.4kw no problem!!!

It’s not the cable just to rule that out.

It has a 2-phase charger, 16A per phase. So if you only have one phase that's 3.6 or 3.7 kW. In Germany (and Sweden, where I live) a house nearly always has 3 phases. But 35A fusing that you would need to charge with 32A on a single phase (7.4 kW) is very unusual, it would be quite expensive and unnecessary for a normal household.
So I guess it's been designed for "continental" Europe and 3-phase systems. The odd thing, from my perspective, is that it has a 2-phase charger and not 3-phase.

Thank you JanM. It’s very odd and a little disappointing. Mercedes should be much clearer.

Hello,

This issue has been known in France since 2020. Mercedes technical documentation is not precise. Customer service response : it works as designed !!

Result for me : a 64A single-phase Wallbox (1600€) which operate at 16 A (3,6KWH) with a yellow Menenkes Cable.

7.4kw wall box single phase

Hi just finished install of 7.4kw wall box at home and my 2021 will accept the full charge rate of 7+kw. In fact it is only presently limited to 4.3kw because the MB supplied cable is rated at 20amp. This is a UK single phase install. Your wall box is v clever and will only let you take what is safe ampage wise from the supply so if you’ve got limited spare at home or a small cut out fuse rated at 60amp for the whole home don’t be surprised if it is restricted or check your charge cable is 32amp rated. Some wall boxes
especially ones found at work places will share the supply if “the robot” (wall box) has two outlets. Hence only getting 3.4kw ish.

Unfortunately you're correct. I went to the trouble of buying a 32amp single phase charge cable as merc one is only rated at 20amp and its the car that restricts the charge to 3.6kw which is REALLY poor of MB. Even got a message from my wall box app saying charge speed restricted by vehicle just to rub salt into the wound.

I resolved this issue by installing a new Type 2 Plug on the Wallbox Charger (at the car end) which I wired to supply the single phase to both L1 and L2 of the plug. The car (Mercedes GLE 350 DE (2021)) now charges at approx. 7 kW instead of 3.5 kW from my Wallbox Pulsar Plus (single phase 32A). Note that this fine works for this car, may not work for other models.

Would love to see a video of that in action. Think you’d have a few customers of that set up if you were to sell it. $$$$

Hi James,

I purchased a new plug (the one that you plug in the car) on Amazon which I wired as described.
See the attached picture for the type of plug (it is in Spanish but quite self explanatory I think).

Regards,
-Dennis,

Yes but you can only travel 450 miles.
With electric you'd get over 1,000, if MPGe is actually correct. What, it's fake?🫤

Charging Speed

Just took delivery of my GLE 350de ('20 plate) yesterday - and agree it's definitely not the cable, it is the car. I'm using the same rig and cable set up that I use for my Tesla which charges at a very healthy speed - but getting only 3.6kW max for the Merc. Damn annoying because it takes forever given that it's such a large battery for a PHEV. The only upside is that it takes DC at superfast chargers so at least motorway stops are quick!
