Mercedes Me Connect - Subscription charges

How long the Mercedes Me Connect features like remote start are provided for free when you buy a new GLE 350. Is it 1 year or 3 years?

Also any idea on the subscription charges after the free period?

Used to be 3 years, but I just noticed the other day that they changed it and now it's only 1 year. Prices for renewal are not known at this point. The store was supposed to go live this year, but has been delayed due to COVID, so currently the service can't be renewed. However, another member recently talked to MBUSA and due to the delay they are extending the services until the store comes online. He was told to call them if any of the services get turned off, and they will reactivate them. Eventually once the store is online we'll be able to renew through the app.

It looks like for the 2022 models the subscription is only one year. I confirmed at least for my car, it ends next year. I too thought it was three years. Guess they changed it. Anyone know what the price is for the subscription?

Wish MB had a simple remote start like BMW using Key Fob (along with the app function). The took one of the basic features just to make revenue (first free for 3 years and now 1 year). BMW X5 have remote start in key fob and in app.

Yea agreed, at minimum remote start should just be on the key fob. And the Mercedes me functionality actually used to be 4 years (my dad had it on his 2016 GLE for 4 years), then it went to 3, and now it’s at 1. From what I remember it’s like 200 a year for Mercedes me functionality which is pretty steep for a service that works like 20% of the time. Very frustrating indeed.

But In the larger scheme of things it’s not that big of a deal. If you want all that software functionality you get a Tesla. However a Tesla just isn’t on the same level as a Mercedes when it comes to the total package.

Yes, they could charge $200 a year is they have fully working product. It is not rocket science to fix it, they need to invest in good network and hardware...

Remote start is a basic thing in cold regions, I can't add an aftermarket product since MB will void the warranty.. (:-(

yea can’t argue with you here. It’s not that hard. If a third party shop can retrofit it then MB as a brand shouldn’t have issues creating a more robust app.

I did notice you started a different thread regarding this. One of the members (jtjbt20x) stated he contacted the Mercedes me connect support and was told to bring his car to the dealer to have them perform an update on the HERMES module and he said it works all the time now. I haven’t tried that yet but that is the next step. Definitely want remote start to work all the time in the dead of winter in the cold regions of the US.

Hey everyone. We should have Smartkey Starter aftermarket remote starter coverage that works with factory key (also with optional Drone Mobile smartphone control) available in early 2022, potentially as soon as the end of January. Give us a call around then to see if the coverage for this vehicle is ready!

That's awesome ! Please let us know when it's ready for release. I had this system in my previous ML350 and it's 1000% better than the POS I currently have with my 450. I used to be able to remote open the rear hatch, the car wouldn't shut off when remote started and I opened the door, I could turn on my heated seats and much more... The standard MB setup is pathetic !

FIrst, as for the free period, it depends on the dealership. For example, all the Fletcher Jones MBZ dealerships offer 3 years free. Others are 1 year.
Next, they break down the service for the features you want vs. the ones you can live without.
1. Setup service - this is for door locks vehicle location and data - $15/year
2. Monitoring - $15/year. This is for telamatics, vehicle locator, valet protect, software updates, tracker etc
3. Navigation services - $30/year4. Live traffic/weather $50/year6. Remote Vehicle start $35/year (something I must have with the 115F Vegas summers)
Yep, talk about being nickeled and dimed

The free trial isn't up to the dealership. They have no control over it. It used to be 3 years, but MY22+ are now 1 year.

BMW is going to charge $17 a month for heated seats and will also offer a 1 & 3 year plan. It will be a cold day in hades before I start paying monthly fees for a basic accessory. I didn’t read the article so they might put them in all vehicles without charging unless you want to use the feature. Realistically, they will certainly include the cost in the vehicle pricing so you will probably pay twice.

That was in Korea - would not fly here to pay twice for something you already paid for. The services I want will cost me $150/year. Not cheap, but could be worse.

Thanks, I didn’t read far enough into the article. There is still conjecture that it will only be a matter of time in the US for more of the same. A way to sell it is offering to let you purchase a feature later or pay monthly. Maybe make it free for 90 days like Satellite radio. Realistically if they put a feature in all cars they will probably include it in the vehicle price. It seems that other Brands are contemplating similar moves but maybe with different features. Remember when cloud storage for our phones was free…then a smaller and smaller amount.
Heated seats seem like an odd feature to start with….

C450, GLS 63 and a few other things
Yes, I think lots of brands and features will go this way. The big ripoff and money maker for manufacturers will be when they make subscriptions (even the "one time" fees) that don't transfer to a new owner when the vehicle is sold. 3 different owners will be paying for heated seats, Car Play, etc. at some point.

I just hope enough people revolt against this that the manufacturer’s will change their tune. This is nothing but a money grab. It’s bad enough car prices have gone up so much that they represent a much greater proportion of our income versus 20+ years ago.

I just hope some coder figures out how to unlock these things in the future.

My thoughts exactly but it may already be too late. Here’s the article by the Verge (overstated maybe) but the GM numbers show the reason-$2 Billion in revenue now & $25 Billion estimate by 2030. This huge income potential will have them all moving that direction. Netflix moving to Adds!

It's true - we've become a subscription economy.
The revenue benefits have been demonstrated in other industries, and the stock market rewards companies who start or expand their subscription business. Office 365 and Adobe Photoshop are examples.
Autos are next, and you might even say Mercedes is late to the party, looking at that article.
