Question Jumpstarting GLE450?

Hi,

I've searched the forum but can't find a definitive answer.

Can the GLE450 be jumpstarted?

Thanks.

Yup, it is just like any other vehicle. Except it also charges the 48V battery via the voltage converter.
Here is an image posted by someone else here, you may also find these instructions on page 465 or 467/481 (depending on your country) in your user manual.

Thanks, I searched my manual and didn't see it before. The procedure is on page 328 in my 2021 GLE Operator's Manual.

You're welcome, yes I mentioned the different page numbers since I realized the user manuals and listed features are in different order for different countries but looks like I still missed one or probably many, so I am sorry about that.

I question that it can be jump started as normal unless you were to leave it connected for more than the normal time to charge the 48 volt battery. It might depend on the state of charge of the 48 volt. If it’s completely dead it might take some time with a 12 volt source to bring it up to enough power to crank over the ISG. The battery management controller shouldn’t let it discharge completely unless it sat for an extended length of time. I wonder if anyone has actual experience?
Also, if you happen to be get one of the bad 48’s that seem to fail at an unpredictable time…you can’t jump start your vehicle at all.

Li-Ion batteries maintain their charge pretty well when not used. I was under the impression that the need to jump start usually comes from the 12V battery, which controls all the electronics, being low. JMO.

Interesting point…I agree with the Li-Ion discharge…from what I’ve read the battery management system won’t let them discharge past a certain point. Complete discharge or overcharge might ruin a Lithium battery. A NMH battery gradually slows to a stop when discharged vs a Lithium just stops working in a power tool. I always assumed it was to keep the battery within a safe state of charge but might be wrong.

When my 12 volt battery failed in my GLE 450, my car would still start and after running a while the auto leveling started working. I got a critical battery notice (M. App) after parking. I assumed that the Lithium provided enough juice back to the 12 to light up the low draw functions but it’s also possible my bad 12 still had a little juice left. Will the 48/12 inverter pass power through to the 12 volt or just the ISG when charging?

My comment depends on how much I've driven the car in a week. But, basically I usually place my CTEK 5.0 on the battery posts under the hood usually once a week just to bring everything up to full charge. It usually takes up to 12 hours + -- for a full green light charge so usually do it over night. When I start the car, it's right at 12.8V on the AGM battery. Driving through the week, when I start the engine it's at 14.9V then shortly afterwards probably no more than 10 minutes it shows 12.8V again and stays there.

Works for me so far with the new part number 48V Lithium Ion battery.
