Screw size?

I'm trying to replace my license plate screws but can't find the right size. I got a CA custom plate which is black but the screw I have now is a huge silver one so I'd like to replace it with a black screw. My OCD won't let me keep the silver ones.

Anyone know the right size? Thanks in advance.

Keep it simply, go buy some flat black or gloss Rust'oleum paint and a fine brush, and paint the heads black...problem solved.

You could take the screw to a hardware store. The hardware section usually has a board that you can insert the screw into to determine the thread type.

edited to reflect any hardware store

That’s a smart solution if you can find one big enough to cover the head.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I wanted to serve two purposes by replacing the big silver screws (philips head) with smaller black ones (hex head?)..one is the aesthetics and the other is make it somewhat theft deterrent. It's rare but the license plates do get stolen.

Mine appear to be 6mm x 1.0 thread pitch.

to answer your question the thread is M 6 x 1, the stock bolt is 10 mm

This link is what you want in stainless black oxide, button head with a cool female hex drive, 12 mm length. I suggest getting a longer one if you are going through a frame, the 12 should do it, or 16 mm if its a thick frame
