New Tech Finally?

Here’s some interesting info from a Stock Analyst:

In 2024, brand new Mercedes Benz models will hit the road featuring Nvidia's self-driving technology, and they'll be joined soon after by cars from Tata Motors' Jaguar and Land Rover.

Fine and dandy, but I have no interest in self-driving tech until I'm too old to drive myself.

There's more to it than that. This will mark a beginning of a SoC and modern Tech architecture...hopefully.
The self driving is coming whether we like it or not. If it's a prescription service then we might still have an option with/without.

Based on my experience with Tesla who is arguably leaps & bounds ahead of the pack, self driving is still many years away.
Quite frankly self-driving is a decade away for major cities, you can barely drive here as an experienced driver.
Unless carmakers themselves invest into roads bridges & tunnels, it just ain't happening my city can't even get road striping right.

...and even then the system will break down when there are road repairs, flag men, lane blockages, accidents, etc. Much more than a decade away I would say. But that's for true self-driving vehicles. We'll continue to see significant improvement in driver's assistance technology, however.

I can't argue with you about the acceptability and suitability of self-driving cars. In addition to your comments, there are ethical issues.

However, Mercedes is ahead of Tesla in self-driving technology. Not only have they been doing it longer, but they are the first to receive full approval from some entities on public roads.
Tesla isn't there yet. Nor is google, Apple, or any of the other hopefuls.

Tesla is years ahead in some aspects, they have been harvesting millions of hours of driving especially in the past 2 years as they switched off radar.
With 9/10 cameras per vehicle, including driver-facing cams, those things are pumping an enormous amount of data into their servers.
Hardware-wise it's simply cameras, radar, and ultrasonic and that hasn't changed much, data & algorithms is where the efforts seems to be headed.

That’s probably true to some extent but then Google will have the biggest advantage followed by Apple. Google has the most accurate Maps, the huge data base and ongoing “real time” self driving vehicle testing in AZ & CA. We may be over thinking the future of self driving cars to some extent.
A phased approach is more likely than full Level 5 self driving. The Freeway could lead the way with trucks first and autos not far behind. Then as system architecture and capability advance we might see point to point followed years later by full Level 5.
It might take legislation at the Federal Level or State by State to make it feasible though. The huge potential liability in our Litigious Society might be one of the biggest obstacles.
