Minor Rattle Rear

I have a minor rattle. It’s always hard to pinpoint these things but it sounds like it’s coming somewhere from the rear passenger door area. I can’t tell if it is from the ceiling area (I have the panoramic roof), sometimes it sounds like it is. I opened the pano roof and rolled down the windows to no avail. I checked the cargo cover and it’s sitting in there tight.

Any ideas or suggestions.

Check inside your spare tire well.
If that doesn't work look inside the fuse corner at the right rear.
Good luck. I hate rattles.

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at those two locations and could not see anything in those areas that might cause the rattle.

It really doesn’t bother me because I always have the radio on and cannot hear it, it’s just those brief moments when it’s off that i notice it.

Any other suggestions? I think it might be coming from the roof, either the sunroof or something else up there. I tried to prod the ceiling speaker but I don’t believe it’s that.

Maybe not a rattle but do you have anything in the center console? I have my OBDII reader in there and it slides around due to the felt lined console. At first it sounded like i had a small empty water bottle sliding around under my seat or in the backseat area but found out it was the reader.

Yes, I noticed items in there would cause noise, but it’s not that. I emptied it and it still persists. Thanks, though.

I believe your car is brand new, so maybe this isn't your problem. We just had an issue where there was a noise in the left rear. Tried to diagnose it by sitting back there. It would only appear in neighborhood and city streets. On the highway, it would disappear. Turned out to be a bad left rear shock. Both rears replaced under warranty at 25k miles.

Someone reported a rattle from a misaligned rear hatch locking assembly.

Ron, is there a picture if that assembly? Is it the actual hook and latch for the hatch that secures to the body?

It’s probably buried in an old thread. Yes, the assembly you can see. As I recall it was slightly out of adjustment resulting in a loose fit-letting the hatch door jiggle. Only saw the one post and it might have been 1-2 years ago.

Well I have an appointment scheduled for next week. I really hate rattles, too, especially when the car is so quiet to begin with. Out of my last four new cars, the only one that didn’t have a rattle was the BMW. Brand new Audi S7 and Lexus LS460 both had rattles from day one and all of them, coincidentally, were in the headliner/sunroof area, which is where I think this one is as well. Oh well.

In my case, I found it to be the seat hinge point that latches. It’s a metal on metal squeak and when the seat is down with no weight on it and the right conditions it will make noise. I opened the seat and drove and confirmed that it goes away. So, I need to have determine the best fix for how it latches so that it won’t make noise when closed and no weight is on the seat.

That was on my 2021 GLE63S - no noises on my 2022 GLE63S

Hmm that’s where I’m hearing the noise. When you say the seat is down you mean it only makes noise when it’s folded flat? There’s no noise in the upright position?

Same here...I have a rattling/wobbling sound when going over uneven roads. Sound like its coming from the rear wheel well areas, but hard to tell for sure.
Rattling sound is still there if second row and third row seats up or down. Any thoughts?

Seat tilted forward (I have the second row power seats) using the button at the top of the rear seat. When forward you can see the two bars the latching point sit on and that is where the noise occurs. I think the whole seat mechanism is suspect personally but 99.9% of the noise stopped when I tilted the passenger side rear seat forward and drove the vehicle.

PS - it will also stop if someone that weighs more than 50 pounds sits in the seat to stop it from moving while driving.

Thanks. I’m going to fold down the seats and see if it makes a difference.

Tilt forward - just folding them flat made no change in the noise in my case. The latching point is the metal on metal squeak that I was hearing but never did on test ride or ride home because there was someone in the seat… lol.

You mean move the seat between fully upright and fully flat? I moved the seat fully flat and no difference.

Passenger side rear seat (not middle portion) tilts forward towards passenger front seat. It does on mine which has power second row seats. I used the button on top of the seat itself not the set at the rear of the car. The latching mechanism on the bar is the noise.

Well, none of my troubleshooting has helped and on the way to the dealership today another rattle/buzzing developed ironically right as I was pulling up. I actually had the sense to record this one, at least a few seconds of it. It kind of sounds like it's from the ceiling near the visor area or the dashboard. I couldn't exactly tell. I also couldn't tell if it was a physical rattle or electronic buzzing. You'll have to turn the volume up.

So the rattle is gone, at least the original one. It was a trim piece that was loose. I wish I could have spoken to the tech to get a precise location but I couldn’t so all I have is the paperwork below.

I took a tech on a drive and he heard the front one as well, but it’s been intermittent, and they couldn’t pinpoint it. They think it’s coming from the center speaker and they felt taped it, but it wasn’t conclusive and the paperwork says as such.

If it's outside the cabin and underneath the car, your dealership should have "Chassis Ears" to attach down there, and listen and pinpoint noises.

If it's inside the cabin and you have a helper, you can use a stethoscope that you attach an extension to, extending your ears and pinpointing a location anywhere inside you can reach. It's worth doing if you find it maddening.
