Sorry to resurrect a toxic old thread but the M264 can have a 48 volt system or cannot. They made (make, still with the M260) both. But the 48 volt system is a disconnected BSG, battery starter generator, that feeds through the belts after the engine and before the transmission. It primarily runs the AC, allowing it to run when the engine is off at a stoplight, and also can add a slight power boost. Ths was not on any US cars until the 2023 C43 (M139 is a derrivatove of the M260) and 2024 CLA/GLA/GLB, though W205 C classes and W213 E Classes got it in other markets. The new M254 engine is completly different from the M264, based heavily on the M256 inline 6, and is always 48 volt with an ISG (integreated Started Generator) and no belts. All belts are replaced with the ISG, and because it's integrated into the engine rather a seperate stop on the way to the transmission, it can slightly power the wheels on it's own and do the full start stop benefits, while also replacing belts that are often the soonest maintnance need.
So far the M264 engine seems to be far from perfect, with rare but critical issues (cylinder walls? piston heads? Not entirely sure), but I'm curious about any reports on issues with the M254 so far, aside from ISG issues. As far as I know, aside from the ISG issues, the M256 has been stellar so far, so I'm hoping the M254 will be as well.
As an aside it seems the M139 (and earlier M133) don't have the common M270/M260 engine issues as those parts are different and upgraded, but they seem to have a few seperate issues that are being reported on the C43.
