So what luck have owners had with mounting not exactly where the manual indicates/where the small patterned spots are on the windshield? I know where things are suggested but wondering how things are working if mounted in a different spot.
It’s an issue…. Especially if you have the acoustic option. EZ pass works in the designated windshield space ( right side top of rear view mirror). But….Be advised…if you require other gate passes, or entry tags (RF or other).. Many/most WILL NOT WORK thru the special glass used with that factory option. There are only a couple of small designated “special spaces) on windshield for such transponders . Good luck…it’s been a challenge for us.
My ‘21 doesn’t have the option and never recall having an issue but the ‘22 has it so I guess we’ll see how things work. Going to have to play with radar placement since I really don’t want it or the EZ pass dead center on dashboard to clutter or take away from a nice looking dash. Kind of a pain MB, in case you’re watching/listening.
btw, who the heck needs the special whatever for the front glass? All the trons in the air are there when we are out of the vehicle so it’s hardly “protection” unless you’re driving near the sun 🤔
FYI, EZ pass also has a tag that mounts onto your license plate, if you have one. Even better, you can register your license plate on the web site, and never need to use the device again. They take photos of front and rear plates of every car that passes through a toll plaza. If they don't read a tag, their computers will will match your plates to the database. If there, you're good. If not, they will send a summons, which will cost you nothing if you can prove you have an EZ pass account or have registered your plates. I have not received a summons in years and no longer use the tag.
As Tony said they will charge you as long as your plate is registered. When I had a loaner for a few days, I register the plate and remove it when I return the car. One time on my return to the dealer, the plate was registered and missed the toll reader location. Toll was charged to my acct. Last time I was driving from the dealer and the loaner car plate was not registered at that time. I used EZ pass on one location and missed other toll location. Still they matched and charged my account.
I just let them bill me since my license plate is on file.
As far as RD, this is about the only spot that will work with the acoustic option, unless you place it on the passenger’s side where the other non-shielded area is, which in my opinion, not convenient since it’s out of reach.

@Neurobit are you still using the R7, or did you move on? I just ordered one and planning on running the custom firmware offered on rdforums. Did you ever hardwire it?

@cupecoy Yes, still rocking the R7 with latest factory fw. It’s a wonderful RD and I’ve yet to find a reason to upgrade.
Still not hardwired. I have it centered low on the windshield since I have the acoustic windshield and it’s one of two spots where it will work, so not hardwired (though about doing it but I just can’t find the time to do this right now).

The Fancy windshield reduces interior damage from solar radiation. Save your Dash!
I was more interested in the Acoustic properties of the side glass - I'll put up with specific locations for passes and RD placement.
Maybe the windshield is why my car still has a nice leather smell as I start year three.
