2023 GLE 450 & 2020 GLC 63S
"System Malfunction"
Yesterday the wifey was driving her 2023 GLE450 and suddenly everything (except for the phone) shuts off. Car dies and the entire screen went blank while the words "System Malfunction" briefly displayed. She literally coasts to the side of the road, hits the start button and everything comes back to life. We called Mercedes roadside just in case and they arranged for a tow to the dealer (didn't want her driving it again until it's checked out).
Anyone heard of, or experience this?

Probably nothing to do with the 48v system.

Just curious what you mean by the phone not dying, can you please provide more details about that? Was she able to shift into park after pulling the dead car to the side?
Could it be related to the bad ground connection? I know previous years had a recall about that.

Me neither, that is a first. Either way it might just be a glitch which resolved itself, kind of line a run-time error when it crossed some parameters in a program.

She was on the phone via Bluetooth (vs CarPlay) and the call did not drop. No shifting as it literally just died like a brick. Power steering, etc.

This happened to me on the highway with our 53 but in my case it kept driving. I think this is going to be a serious software recall. Of course dealer never heard about it.

Could it had to do with the fuel pump recall (it was due to a faulty pump)? I wonder if the car was affected?

It wouldn’t surprise me if this malfunction isn’t software related, or associated with any flaw, but a direct result of the morons at the Alabama plant forgetting something during production.

Update: We picked up the car yesterday after several days at the dealership. They ran diagnostic tests, checked to see if we had the most recent software update (which we had), and drove it over 60 miles trying to replicate the issue. They couldn’t. The service advisor said his tech had heard of this before, but it seemed to be a ‘no cause, no cure’ issue, Go figure!
