Buying direct has its own set of pitfalls.
The biggest one is you don't have the dealer exerting leverage on your behalf.

Every 10 or 20 years, there's a movement to abolish dealers in the US. Tesla has recently led that charge, mostly because their business model is unprofitable.

And those movements are defeated because it damages the customer.
