2018 - 2024 roof rail crossbars
Pretty minor thing, but curious as my 450e delivery is getting close:
Does anyone know if the crossbars from my 2018 GLE will fit a 2024 GLE?

picked up vehicle yesterday. FWIW - the crossbars do fit, and when tight i can't push/move them with all my strength. That said, the profile of the roof rails is slightly different than the old ones and the little lip that goes under the outside edge of the rail doesn't go under.
Not something i want to mess with - can just see the roof box lifting off at highway speeds. So i will go with a different solution.

I’m trying to figure out what solution I want for taking golf clubs on road trips. Are the cross bars something that need to stay semi permanently or can you easily take them on and off? I don’t want to keep the crossbars permanently affixed and trying to decide if a top box or a trailer hitch box would be better.

I have only put them on for roadtrips (with cargo box) or for something large like a christmas tree. otherwise always took them off. takes < 5min.
if you have a W166 GLE and are looking for some i would give you a good offer for my old ones (MB originals).

Thanks that’s super helpful. W167 GLE. Do the OEM bars seem good? Is that what you went for on the new model?

Lots of info already here:

I used the Wingbar Evo 135's.
Pano roof will not fully open, fyi, if you have one.
Otherwise pretty quiet at high speeds. Slight noise but can't hear it with the radio on.
Wife's 11' SUP fits great on this.

2024 GLE 450e
Does anyone know of roofbars which "do" allow the panoramic roof to open fully. I would have thought that someone would make the end caps higher. If not, I guess I will buy the MB which are specified for a 2024 GLE 450e...which are on lase now in Canada.

This is all the way toward rear side on crossbars (even box) but still they are only in the front half
And we know the panorama glass roof looks great but sound insulation is not good. Without roof box on, the bar itself even makes whistling more than should compared other SUV that I have had. In addition, even with the big gap between glass roof and bar (which is not favorable to noise/aerodynamic too), it still doesn’t let me use the sunroof opened…
I am trying to make the aluminum width narrower for wind noise thin by cutting them off maybe 1.5inch overall each front and back crossbars(still should be able to install the same position due to adjustment room on both ends if wants). Has anyone the same issue as I have and know how to trim off the aluminum bars? Even thinking about asking MB dealer (first attempt via phone pretty much ignored “don’t do that”) but afraid they can’t. Or I have to return it… please help me!

I don’t have any wind noise but not using a roof box either. The bars can be cut easily with a fine carbide tipped circular blade, but looking at hem it’s not clear to me how to remove the end bracket.

2024 GLE 450e
I got my MB roof racks yesterday and we put them on my friends 2024 GLE 450e...so, look great and super happy....now just waiting for my GLE to be built and delivered.
The front rack as a rubber bumper on the saddle...can anyone explain to me why this is there?

Looked like I could cut the aluminum bar part off with an oscillating tool but was not sure if the plastic part slides in further as much as cutoff. It slides in and out like an inch or so now and it looks like there’s something stops sliding out inside of the aluminum part. anyone has the drawing/ diagram? I am going to ask MB dealer but not much expected from them though.

That was what stops the sunroof opening. It appeared to be just a rubber block on x167’s. MB designed to not be able to open the sunroof when the crossbars on????

Rear Crossbar Placement
I can't believe nobody mentioned this. The instructions for the Mercedes crossbars for the W167 (for me, a 2024 GLE 450e) say to put the center of the rear crossbar at 28 inches from the back end of the rail. This puts it dead on the mounting post for the side rail. It can't hang on there because the crossbar clip cannot grab the rail. The crossbar will fit forward of that, but not aft of that because the distance between the rails tapers as you go back. What did you do? So far, I mounted it forward of the side rail post. I guess that's OK.
Also, to answer(?) a question. They put rubber bumpers on the front (only) crossbar SPECIFICALLY to stop you from sliding back the sunroof. I wonder why? Anyone try reversing the front and rear crossbars to defeat this? (I doubt they would be the right lengths, but I don't know.)

Yes, they put that there on purpose to stop the sunroof from opening to slide (but allow tilt). For what reason, I have no idea, but I bet it's noise. It is very touch to design a sunroof that does not "organ pipe".
