I checked the manual in my 2022 as well as 2021 you said you had it lists different behaviors for Active Lane Keeping Assist depending on whether you have the Driving Assistance Package. It seems it will also apply the brakes in some situations when you have the package, but less often then without the package. That said, it's definitely very subtle and I've never had harsh brakes applied in my 2022 GLE. When I drove the rental I mentioned, it was very harsh - I panicked the first time those brakes were applied.

For steering vs brakes, it's NOT about having Active Steering Assist, it's about your model year. MY 2020-2022 use brakes as per their manuals. 2023+ use steering. Sure, 2020-2022 might still differ in the way they apply brakes but it's brakes.

What if a car didn't have Active Steering at all? It would have to just use the brakes I think.

I am mot sure if many 63's were built without the "Driver's Assistance Package Plus" but the brakes are phenomenal on the 63. The large rotors with six piston calipers take very little pedal effort. That being said I wish the computer could be reprogrammed to nudge the steering wheel or at least reduce the amount of braking force applied by the "Active Lane Keeping Assist". I had assumed it was due to the great brakes that it jerked so hard. Now I know that is not the case.
My Superduty just vibrates the steering wheel and the intensity of the vibration can be adjusted or disabled. Of course for being a "stupid" Ford it has key fob remote start among other programming MB has decided not to allow.

Yeah, I don't think it's the brakes. It was very harsh and unnerving in a rental A-class that definitely didn't have great brakes.

I mean, you can just open the manuals and check. For the US vehicles, it doesn't mention any relation to Active Steering Assist, only to Driver Assistance Package and only for some specific conditions that have nothing to do with brakes vs steering. Active Lane Keeping is currently a part of Driving Assistance Package, same as Active Steering Assist in the US, not sure how it was in prior model years. For the EU vehicles, I just don't know.
