I completely messed the "valve flush!"
I'll ask for clarification. Monday or Tuesday.
The dealer delivered my car so I didn't get a chance to talk to the service advisor.

Got my car back from the dealership on this issue (harsh 5 > 4 downshift). They performed a “stand still adaptation” as well as a complete reset of the downshift programming according the paperwork. Additionally, they said that there is a software update in the works for my 24 GLE 450 but not yet ready. They got this information from a “topic” or something similar. Recommended I circle back in a few weeks to see if it has developed any further.

In the meantime, I can confirm that whatever they did definitely has a positive effect on the issue. The 5 > 4 downshift is much smoother for now. My impression is that this is just temporary bad-aid. This supposed software update will be needed to resolve the issue permanently.

We’ll see.

Hopefully it is fixed for good : )

OP here. I got my car yesterday from service yesterday and I mentioned the 5 -> 4 downshift problem.

They did "RESET LEARNED VALUES, PERFORMED STANDSTILL ADAPTATION" and this completely solved the problem. 5->4 shifts are butter smooth now. I just fear it'll relearn the bad values and come back in a few months. I guess we will need to wait for that software update for the real fix – and keep patching it until then.

I'm at a month since the standstill adaptation. Still good (Knock on wood). Maybe Mercedes finally figured out what the problem was.

Good news it fixed it, I wonder if MB should start doing stand-still adaptations as part of PDI : )

Same Problem Here

I have the same problem. I call
it a lurch. I plan to let service know next time I’m in. Seems to happen when applying break from a higher speed. And, it occurs in the last 1/3 of the breaking experience.

I have a 2024 GLE 450 and I recently started to experience some harsh downshifting while breaking, for the last 2-4 weeks. Vehicle is 7 months and has 8,500 miles.

It happens around 40% of the time, but only if the car was in 5th gear or higher. Otherwise either it doesn't happen or it's so mild that I don't feel it. If you put the vehicle info screen with acceleration and braking you can see the braking going from 8% to 16% or so when this happens. It looks like the car is deliberately using 5->4 (and 5->3!) to apply a good bit of extra braking. But it's so much that is not smooth and gets annoying. In my case it lasts until coming to a stop, so I am not sure if it's the transmission or the whole braking behavior/system/programming. It seems more pronounced when there is a car in front of me, or there is a stop sign, so maybe? (I have driver assistance package). This may be totally placebo and instead it may be related to the current speed before braking. I am not sure if the assisted braking uses radar/stop information or not. I know the regen does, cranking the regen if there is a slowing vehicle in front.

I'll mention this to the dealership next time the car is there and I have a loaner. It would be great if they can reset the parameters to what it was before.

I've seen several posts over the years complaining about this behavior – I wonder if other folks with 2024 GLEs are experiencing this.

Same harsh jerking downshifting problem here

I bought my GLE 450 in April and it came out of Houston, but I live in Dallas. I started having the same harsh downshifting problem a couple months ago with only 6500 miles.

Thanks for all the good info. I need to find a good dealership in Dallas. Any recommendations?

Recommend requesting for a standstill adaptation: )

After Mikapen mentioned this, I requested a standstill adaptation during recall work to see if I would notice any improvements in my shifting. I never experienced harsh shifting as described in this thread, although I felt the shifting could be better in certain situations, such as at slow speeds going up steep hills or terrain (the shift from 1 to 2 was a bit off). I don’t know if it’s a placebo effect or too early to give a full assessment, but since this adaptation, I do feel the shifting is smoother on my 580. It didn’t fix my ISG jerk at the 3-4 mph range, but I was just being hopeful as I didn’t think it would fix it, nor did my foreman. My foreman said the standstill adaptation is the same as forced adaptation (like @S_W222), except they can apply it in a mechanics bay instead of having two techs in the car, driving around with a laptop. He said the method takes maybe 5 minutes, and you apply the brakes and throttle. The car jerks pretty hard with shifts; he said the vehicle is not on rollers at all. The computer records all of these shifts and then applies the new adaptation to the car.

I still don't quite understand how it fully works since it doesn't seem very safe to do "brake-torquing” or “power braking” in a bay but maybe someone else can add further clarity on the method. I probably should have asked for more info but I had to rush to a meeting after picking up my car.

It is definitely not a placebo effect, by factory the transmission learns your driving habit but it is a bad learner, let us just put it that way so it is hesitant and shifts at the wrong times. The standstill adaptation forces the transmission to shift in a specific way.

I always wondered what a forced adaptation and standstill adaption have in common and the differences so glad to hear you found that out for us.

@wildta thanks for more info on the Standstill Adaptation.

My shop's work order showed that mine "failed" the first attempt and succeeded on the second.
There must be some "level of attainment" so they aren't just doing busy work.

Does anyone know how to do a "stand still adaptation" in XENTRY?

FWIW, I have experience the same sudden slowdown when coming to a stop and the transmission shifts from 3 to 2. I have experienced this with both my 2014 C350 and 2015 SL400, both with the 7G+ transmissions. It occurs regardless of the mode I am using but does not happen every time. I had the dealer do a transmission service on both cars a year or so ago and the condition went away for the C350. The SL400 never had the problem until recently. I may do a hard reset using XENTRY (Resetting the adaptation values -- Adaption values of shift operations).

I believe Peter knows how to do it, if I recalled correctly, he commented on the Finally fixed transmission issues thread (or similar name) in the W222 forum.

I did find it in XENTRY. See below. It's in Adaptations > Teach-in processes > Adaptation of the gearshifts > Standstill adaptation.

Does xentry give you an overview of the application of this when you hit CONTINUE? Just curious.

It appears that you can select the specific gear change for adaptation IF I interpret this correctly.

Hitting Continue starts the adaptation. I'm using XENTRY Simulation and I do not know how to set the pedal position.

Is Forced Adaptation what is being done in this video? (It is an older video using DAS, but it looks like it follows the same process where it takes two people to perform the adaptation.). It's interesting in the video that they are performing the adaptation because of a customer complaint with the transmission downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.

So it appears that if you have XENTRY, you can perform the Standstill adaptation yourself when needed.
