retrofitting active LED headlamps to GLE350

I have a 2017 GLE350 with standard headlamps, but would like to have either bi-xenon or the newer active LED headlamps that aim with cornering. Is it possible (and not overly complicated) to retrofit these?

The Bi-Xenon might be possible, but the active LED would be very difficult since it would have to be tied into steering and computer controlled. The on-board computer might be able to do it right away or it may require a firmware update that MB may or may not be willing to provide.

Simply changing the headlights out isn't that hard though.

As far as I'm aware, not possible on a GLE350. You have two headlamp choice, base halogen/LED or Advanced Lighting Pack with the adaptive LED. The latter require new control units and different coding - any attempted swap would be in your driveway with no guarantees.

I've seen it done on youtube by an outfit in china. Do a search for LED light GLE or GLS and you'll see. To my knowledge no one here does it.

another question thats frequently asked. You have two options, #1, which is less pricier and alot of people do is go with the HID kit that azn optics provides and install them and its error-code free. Downside is that you dont have the LED option. Second is to buy the LED headlamp assembly (each piece is above 1k USD), put them in and do all the reconfiguration and computer work, make sure it works with the automatic headlamp/curve/height change. (the housing will fit since the shape of the lamp will fit) There was a poster that went from xenon to LED in the ML section W166, waiting for the poster to show final pictures and how he did it.

Thanks for all of the replies and information. I did suspect that it would involve more than simply changing out the headlamps, possible computer/firmware changes, etc.

I want to do this with my 2018 GLE350 and I figured that was the catch to installing high-intensity headlamps. I now know why everyone says MB cars are waaay over-engineered.

Thanks! Sure 'preciate that.

It's pretty easy to retrofit LED headlights but that does not give the adaptive feature.

Retrofitting either LED or Xenon is fairly easy to do. Mercedes moved all function activation of of the lights to be within the headlamp itself. The headlight control unit receives control from the CAN network. I have not checked wiring but will be simplified over a halogen version.

Firmware updates are not required for this modification. Your vehicle data card must have the option for LED added to it. Then using an online Xentry system, you would code a few modules to change the SCN code in the module and make the module aware of this new feature.

SUNILP - Sounds like a dealer would need to do the update. And I wonder how much a pair of new headlight assemblies would cost (new or used). Sounds like an expensive update.

Stephen Urness of Star European in Yorkville, Il. and I have installed probably 10 or 15 variations of LED and Xenon in my '18 GLE 350. We measured brightness and the best was Hikari Ultra's. The best Xenons were Morimoto 55W but they were not near as bright as Hikari's.
