Brake pads + Spark Plugs + engine air filter

2016 GLE350 4Matic 63,000 miles
Went to the dealer for the “brake pad wear” warning ⚠️ I thought it would be the front pads (looked thinner to me) but the tech says rear pads need to be replaced, front look ok. I’ve never seen this before. It’s always the front pads wear off faster than the rear pads. Total $538 parr’s and labour for both.

Tech says based on my mileage, should replace spark plugs $864 parts and labour and Engine Air $162.

Is this on par with what people are paying ?
How often should spark plugs and air filter be replaced ? I read some people are going to 100K miles before Tune Up.

Also I was surprised that Spark Plugs and Engine Filter replacement is not part of any of the scheduled A B services. Don’t know if there are C or D

Do you have a copy of the maintenance booklet? Service intervals are clearly spelled out.

https://www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/Digital...L_SLK_G_MM.pdf

I bought the spark plugs for around $120 from the local dealer. Add about 3 hours of dealer labor @$200/hr = mid $700. If I was off by 0.5 hours then you're at $800. Seems in the ballpark. I did my own plugs.

Engine air filter and spark plugs are 50k mile replacement items per M-B. Engine air filter is a breeze. Best to have the right kind of pliers from Knipex.

Rear brakes wearing faster than fronts is typical with M-B because assist systems, including basic cruise control, use rear brakes. My rear pads a bit thinner than the fronts, and I consciously avoid using assist systems.

"Standard" service is mainly engine oil, oil filter, wipers, top up windshield fluid, cabin dust and charcoal filters, and change brake fluid (every 2 years for brake fluid).

Spark plugs, engine air filter and transmission oil change are "additional maintenance work".

- Tiank you for the maintenance schedule booklet. To be honest I haven’t read the booklet previously, as I go to the dealer once a year And thought when they service the car, they’ll tell me what’s supposed to be serviced next. Spark plugs was never brought up. Last time I was there
, I asked what’s the next big service and they said it’s transmission fluid change but hey said usually after 70K. I thought that engine air filter is part of B service but now see that’s only cabin filter.

I had my rear brakes done this year after a wear sensor warning came on. $650 at garage specializing in Benzs, not a dealer. I too was shocked to hear I needed rears over fronts. We use Distronic a lot, which I hear utilizes rear brakes.

You are correct Distronic and the other nanny devices all use the rear brakes.... I turned off all active nanny devices except distronic...

I'm only at 7 k miles so far so not much wear yet....

Back from the dealer 2016 GLE350 4Matic, 65K miles. * First time replacing brakes.
A day after, Of course after i paid $1,500 for the service my dealer send this promo spend over $1,200 get $300 off.
here is how much I paid at the dealer
- Rear brakes replacement - labour $185. Parts $260, wear sensor, stop squeal, brake cleaner = $500 total
- Spark Plugs - labour $647.50. Spark plugs $147. Gaskets $69. = $863 total
- Engine Air filter - labour $100. Air filter $62. =$162 total.

I guess not bad at all at the dealer if you can time the promo specials then no need to go to a private shop mechanic etc

@Roni07 The prices seem in line, if one uses $200/hr for dealer service labor. Spark plugs were a 4.5 hour job for me. 3 hours for the dealer seems about right. Engine air filter is about a half hour job for me, it takes the dealer 20 minutes, likely. Rear brakes are about an hour, that looks around what they charged you.

Did you get new rear pads, or pads+rotors for $260 in parts?

I paid about the same as you for spark plugs parts cost at the dealer.

-Yes the Rear was just Pads. Rotors still in good shape. No mention of machining the rotors.
So far, Fronts still original. I’m impressed with the longevity of the Brakes. Hope it stays that way. I would like to learn how to replace Engine and Cabin and Carbon filters but i don’t want to mess with MB stuff. Have done it on Toyota Camry and Honda Civic but this GLE is a different beast

@Roni07 The cabin dust and charcoal filters are not hard. The engine air filter is pretty easy. These are well documented on this site and on YouTube. Take a careful step by step approach. The main things to be aware of that are different from other brands is the potential to break thin plastic pieces (air ducts) and the nuances of owning MB electrical connectors with the separate locking mechanism.
