2016 Mercedes Gle 400 brake problem

Why my 2016 Mercedes Gle 400 is braking weird? When i press the brakes a lower speed 50 mph or less sometimes(not always) it brakes more for a moment , it is like i push the brakes and i try to give same pressure on the pedal but there is one short “hiccup” that feels it is braking more than normal . Trying to find what is causing it , if anyone had the same problem?

Do more testing at different speeds.

Drive at 70 mph. Apply the brakes lightly. What happens? Accelerate to 70 mph. Apply the brakes aggressively (with no cars around you). What happens?

Do the same test at 30 mph.

How long have you owned the vehicle? How many miles are on it? What service work has been done in the last 6 months?

32000 miles

My car has 32k miles on it , bought it from Mercedes dealer at Park Place in Dallas on December 30th of 2019 , so almost one year that i drove it.
I’m new to mercedes but i feel like this has been going on always since i got it on and off .
My brother drove it the other day and he noticed that and i never mentioned that to him!
I haven’t noticed it happening when i go faster,
usually when driving locally, like when i break to stop at stop lights or lower the speed to turn , it just feels the brakes kick more at some point but it is very short, as i said like a hiccup.
Since i got it i did the A3 service 3 months ago, which it’s basically oil change and they check the fluids.

do you feel the surge in the pedal or in the vehicle itself... problems like this could be control arms or other suspension components... if you feel it in the pedal, then could be a type of extra braking force... my BMW from several years ago had a dynamic braking system that applied a surge to the brakes if you applied the brakes a bit harder than usual... get it checked... brakes are very important!

I don’t think i feel it on the pedal, it feels like something going on at the brakes or rotors , but i know the rotors are fine since the car doesn’t vibrate or anything, breaks good it’s just that little extra brake at a certain moment and it doesn’t happen always, not sure if I’m explaining it right!
thank you!

Check the brake pads. How much is left on them? You can see this through the wheel, normally.

I think the brake pads, are fine , they’re still got like 50-60% life on them if not more

Could be low brake fluid, Air in the system, hot spots or warp rotor would be my guess.

I hope your not getting confuse with the ABS kicking in.

!st check level of brake fluid under hood. Next get into the car (WITHOUT Engine running) and gently push the brake pedal several time ( do not release). You will feel increase pressure build up. After three or 4 times, remember do not take foot off pedal. Now start the cars , foot still on pedal. You should feel the brake pedal move towards the floor. If this happens you brake booster is working.

Next I would have brake system bleed , good time to change brake fluid too. Mercedes has a time or mileage recommendation on changing brake fluid. Most people don't do it and there are yeas and nays on why or why not,

Keep us posted. Good luck

For anyone that's doing the rear brakes only you need to deactivate the SBC brake system. While you battery is on (motor is turn off) On the steering wheel press the telephone button then the ok button on the opposite side to get into the setting's (PAD REPLACMENT) Once the brake (red color ) start to flash then the brake system is deactivate. Once you get done replacing the rear brakes. You need to reactive the SBC brake system.

I'm so glad that my friend told me about it before I took the vehicle up in the air (2 post vehicle lift).

I'm very happy with the performance of PowerStop brakes having gone to the drilled and slotted brakes for the rear. The front brakes had plenty of life left last summer, but I'll be keeping an eye on them. What I found interesting was the left side without the sensor wore out first and didn't set the worn brake message off. I ordered mine through rockauto.com and since I didn't see the pads came with a sensor and having seen posts where some said there was a sensor on all wheels I now have a few extra. Thankfully they are cheap and if pads wear while the rotors are still serviceable I can use them then.

PowerStop do make good brakes epically there rotors. I know allot of racers that uses them on the track. It's awkward with the sensor. My old CLK W209 had one for the front and one for the rear and every time It was time to service the brakes I never got the warning message. I keep an excel of all my vehicles with date, mileage and the work service. That way I keep records on what's been done and how long ago it was done.
