2018 GLE43 Shopping advice

Looking for a new-to-me vehicle and have really focused on the GLE during my search. Started very wide (Land Rover, 4Runner, BMW X# etc) but the styling and fit/finish of the GLE keeps drawing me in.

Have been scoping out the various posts here and learning as much as I can about the trials/tribulations/"features" of the range. Chassis' long running ownership post has been so enlightening as have the various other posts with engine issues etc.

Going to drive a few different examples that I've found for sale locally and am really interested in a 2018 GLE43. (75k-KM (46k Miles), clean carfax) The same lot has a 400 and a couple others from more recent model years.

What are some of the things I need to look out for and should test on the drives, looking under the hood etc. for this year and model? What questions of its history should I inquire about? Any way to ascertain if the car was beaten on by prior owner(s)?

Apologies if there is a thread that captures all this that I wasn't able to find. - Mods, kill the thread if that's the case as I'd hate my first post to just be clutter.

Cheers all. If I go this route will be sure to keep posting any learning's etc. from the process and ownership.

Good choice. W166 is the most reliable MB platform in the past 20 years. Same comment for the M276 V6 engine. All MB transmissions are meh at best so the GLE43 is neither better nor worse than other MB models as far as transmission is concerned.

2019 is best as it was the last model year for W166 and pre-pandemic which MB navigated particularly badly.

Lowest miles/kms and full service history are preferred. Look for spark plug changes and transmission fluid replacement. All regular maintenance on MBs is a must.

Air suspension should be considered a maintenance item, specifically the springs/air bags. Lots of DIY posts on this site so it’s known science.

I would say no major concerns with this model provided it has been regularly maintained on time and per MB schedule. Higher option content is better, which you will find in the GLE43. Designo interior, parking pilot and Bang and Olufsen stereo would be options to look for. Desirable but not required.

Good luck with the hunt and keep us updated!

Before we bought our 2017 GLE 43 SUV, looked at porsche bmw audi...

Wife loved the style and comfort...good performance easy to tune...a bit of cachet with AMG. Try to find one with Active Curve. Changes the whole way the SUV can drive.

thank you for that @chasis . Will definitely look to see if the regular maintenance was done by the owner with MB. My SO has always had their work done by MB and we have a great relationship with the local dealership. Will be happy to have them do the work that is beyond my skill set or tool set.

having a similar path. Going to test drive a few to be sure but have a feeling the GLE will be where I end up.

When I love my GLE300D for 700 miles range on the tank, it proved to be very capable vehicle in snow and mud going to the cabin.
Cruising with CC at 100 mph is not bad neither.
I still prefer our 250 Bluetec sedan for everyday driving, but hauling stuff to the cabin belongs to GLE.

Thanks, diesel range is a thing I often consider. Do you know what RPM are you turning for 65MPH?

Mine is at about 1800 rpm at 65 mph in 7th gear. I've never gotten 700 miles to a tank. The best I have done is 672 miles on 22 gallons of fuel. That was cutting it pretty close since it's a 24 gallon tank. In-town mpg depends on the season. Winter is normally 23-25 mpg. The rest of the year I routinely get 26. Highway mpg is usually at least 30.

I am a previous GLE43 owner, a 2018. I really liked the SUV but found out on a road trip to North Dakota that the seats aren't that good and it kept shifting from 9th to 8th gear around 85mph. The other thing that sucked was I didn't order it with LED lamps and the halogen lights are not good. Mine was Selenite Gray with a black interior and was very hot in the summer. It's nice but for the $85K I paid for it I would expect LEDs. I have a GLE63S now. It's a beast!

good advice. will look for one with the LEDs if they exist. have seen the conversion requires new leads etc. Would have thought they'd have gone for LEDs in anything with an AMG badge by that point so very good to know. Going to check a few out today and drive them. comfy seats are also a consideration for me as we'll do some longer drives in it as well.
