9G Tronic transmission service
(will add some more pics soon/update)
I just completed the recommended transmission service on the GLE350d @ 122000KM
For those who are thinking about doing this yourself, it’s not hard. but you do need some special tools,
TOOLS
Easier if you get the toolkit you can get on ebay for $10 shipped to your door. includes pan drain plug hex removal tool, and the hex tool to adjust the filler/drain valve positions 1-4
You’ll also need a fluid pump and some basic tools like jack and E10 torx
The PAN/FILTER $260.00
One Piece, plastic PN 725-270-37-07
Bolts and filler valve not included
The filler tube/valve
The filler valve PN 725-271-21-01 and accoustic diagnostic tube are sold separately for $40CAD but it’s possible to remove them from the old pan and can be reused. there’s no rubber seals in these parts.
THE OIL
MB 236.17 Specfication, MB charges a fortune for this, you’ll need about 5 liters. I bought of MB Dealer on ebay $100 shipped but don’t be surprised to pay 50/liter at local dealer.
If I had to do it again I’d just replace oil as the filter inside the pan is pretty coarse anyways.
PROCESS
You’ll need to lift/raise the transfer case about an inch as the back 3 bolts on the pan (E10) are above the a crossmember where your hands don’t reach.
do this by removing 2 nuts on the crossmember that hold the transfer case. jackup the transfer case and put a piece of wood between crossmember and transfer case. just in case your jack fails your hands won’t get crushed when you’re at it.
Then start by loosening the back 3 bolts from the pan. once you’re sure you can get to those remove the pain drain plug, put in the hex tool and turn the drain valve over to position number #4 (numbered on the pan) this will drain the pan, but about 1 liter will stay behind, that will come out when you remove the pan. Then remove the rest of the bolts and pull pan off. I pulled 4.5 liters out.
Install new pan with valve and guide tube and set fill valve to position number 1 to fill fluid.
I put 5 liters in. Torgue bolts to 4 NM then one more 1/4 turn.
Warm up engine and flip valve to position #3 and let it drain until it trickles out. then close valve to Position#1 (Fill)
THE VALVE
Has 4 positions
#1 FILL (opens highest point on tube)
#2 drain slow
#3 drain to level at temp
#4 DRAIN (opens lowest point on tube)
There is NO closed position, you close it by installing the pan plug. (comes with new pan)
Pan/Pump/Fluid/tool ran me about $500
There’s a video on youtube as well showing this process.
ToolKit $10
Fluid pump
Filler tube
