Showing off my 450 Rooftop Carrier Box

Just sharing (e.g. showing off) photos of my new 450 Rooftop Cargo Carrier Box. Going to be an awesome addition on upcoming road trips this year, and it looks ace!!

I was worried it’d be noisy on the highway, and or affect my MPG, but it’s actually quieter than the bars alone and maybe cost me 0.5 mpg overall (speed makes worse of course).

For size comparison, I’m 6’3 and 250 and I fit completely laid flat inside of it with room to spare… it’s a Mercedes coffin!

Enjoy,

Joel

2nd that, it looks great

I noticed your car has the chrome trim along the lower front end, below the grille and bumper. Never noticed that before. Did that come on the car

I was thinking about getting one just to save more room in the rear cargo area when we go on long road trips. Last road trip, my rear cargo was full. The ice in the cooler leaked out all over our stuff the way how my wife re-arrange the cooler in one of the rest area stop. Lucky it was just ice water and I have a OEM rubber boot tub.

Mine came with it as well from Factory. I believe it was an option chrome package (hood fins, door handle, etc.).

Not sure if it's special, but I like it too! I am not a fan of all the black trim that's popular now-a-days...so when I saw this sparkly white with the chrome, I was hooked

Yeah it's a really great flex space! Overall, if weighs about 75 lbs with the bars so you are left with a roughly 150lbs max capacity that's allowed on the roof. So of course you can PACK IT FULL of duffle bags, clothes and things like this (we put two standup paddle boards deflated along with shoes and stuff in ours) but you'd want to be mindful with heavier things like ice chests and anything really heavy, especially if it shifts around it could crack the plastic. If I were to be on the redesign team, I'd include a firm tray that reinforces the plastic base (think about bumps and punctures as you drive over rough road surfaces) and I'd probably also put some sort of carpet or padding in it to keep things from sliding around inside. Maybe Mercedes sells a foam/padding/restraining kit for it, but otherwise it's just a shiny smooth plastic shell all around inside. Some cargo could interact poorly with that if not well strapped down. It does have to thin straps (like in a suitcase) inside, but that's not really "the best or nothing" in my opinion. It doesn't have to be sheepskin wool rugs inside (like a Rolls Royce) but something a little more security and protective would be appreciated. Happy to take any suggestions you might have!! So far I'm thinking about a roll of foam from a craft store and maybe some cheap moving blankets just to keep stuff still/steady/safe inside. But maybe I drive too crazy to have anything inside of this thing... lol
