Tailgate area switch engaging/disengages @ 12mph

I have a 2018 GLE 350 and when I slow to below about 12 mph I hear a switch engaging and then disengages again above 12 or so mph. The sound comes from the rear liftgate area. Camera, lock, actuator, fuel door?
Thanks!

I'm not sure if your GLE has the camera that's hidden by the Mercedes logo that pops out when needed and hides when not needed. Is it possible it's that?

If not, I've read that all Mercedes SUVs and wagons have a decoupling tailgate latch so maybe that's what you're noticing.

Thanks QuadBenz, the camera is the kind that pops down when you put the car in reverse......maybe decoupling, but it just started........

JPL20,
Your rear camera needs to recalibrate…That’s the camera you hear… to re-calibrate it, you need to find a straight road and come to a stop. Put the CAR (sorry for the wrong word here previously) in reverse and the camera will pop out. Then put the car in drive and drive LESS than 10 mph for about 300 yards or so. It must be straight also! If you turn the wheel more than about 20 degrees, it won’t work.
come to a stop, put the car in park and then drive on normally. This is basically the procedure… I have to do this about once or twice a year.
To test if it worked…you should no longer hear it pop out around 10 mph when you slow down.

Thank you Chef! I will try this soon.

The rear camera should disengage at 10mph (close).

It does, but opens back up when I drive below 10mph......so in stop and go traffic, it opens, closes, opens, closes, opens, closes, and it never did that before.......

If you have 360 degree visibility (cameras under side mirrors) and/or PARKTRONIC I think the rear camera opens at low vehicle speed in preparation for parking.

The rear camera does not open in preparation for parking as you think… only when putting the car in reverse…
I have parktronic and his camera needs recalibration…

Need to be recalibrated

"Copy and Paste"

Complaint: The flap of the reversing camera opens and closes by itself during fonryard travel. No camera image is displayed in the head unit. The reversing camera or the 360' system functions normally when activated manually or by engaging drive range "R".

Cause: This is not a malfunction, but an intended system behavior: Calibration of the reversing camera is in progress. For this, the cover on the camera is opened for max. 5 minutes in fon¡vard travel. The calibration can be performed as long as the vehicle speed is < 30 km/h and the steering wheel angle is < '10". lf these criteria are no longer satisfied before calibration is complete, the calibration sequence is aborted and the camera is retracted. The sequence is restarted when the criteria are met again.

Remedy: Complete the calibration successfully. For this, the vehicle must be driven forwards for a certain time (usually less than one minute) at a speed < 30 km/h and a steering wheel angle < 10".

This should be done in daylight and with no vehicles driving closely behind. The camera must be able to see the asphalt.
When calibration is successful, the camera flap closes automatically.

So I tried to recalibrate 3x and it didn't work, I tried one more time but only went about 150 feet and...... still didn't work. Then on the same drive after the last test the camera stopped popping down out of nowhere, so maybe one of those recalibration attempts worked. Thanks all for help.
