The pads are supposed to float on the caliper hangers where they mount. If one or both were binding up, the caliper would assert them against the rotor, but they wouldn't release, remaining in contact. And every braking action would ensure they would remain lodged. (My guess, anyway.)

That makes sense, although the pad's symmetrical shape means that it would also happen regardless of its inner or outer placement.

Exactly. The pads are mirrors but for the hole. In my 350 the rear has not even had a sensor for about a year (I am replacing the sensor harness when I get the desire). That alone, with physics and what not - can not comprehend how that would alter brake wear. We can see factually they are mirror images in my photo from FCP. I still think that is a snake oil excuse.

If I had to guess, I'd say the manufacturer messed this batch of pads up.

Manufacturer is R1 Concepts. I have reached out to them to let them know about this and to request clearer indicators on pad orientation be printed on the pads to prevent other installers from repeating history.

I am replacing the pads with PosiQuiet ceramics, which my 2009 E350 has and I swear by them.

What was the objection to using factory pads purchased from a dealer?

I'm going to examine this myself, take pictures and send them the bill if I see further damage. It's a slide caliper, nothing complex about it. I bet the float pins were never even removed and greased and the caliper slides are binding with the pad to prevent movement on both sides due to pad installation gone wrong.

I don't think it's possible both rear calipers would fail at the same time. I can also put the parking brake into the retract position for service. The noise can be hearbefor the retraction.
The proper way to handle this if you really want to make it right is to take it to the dealer and have them fix it and you send the guys a bill and if they refuse to pay it, then you take it to a small claims court. I would not accept the money back from them releasing them of liability of incidental damages.

Shop refunded the work on the rears.

For abnormal pad wear to happen in the rear like this:
- The pad the sensor seats in jams the caliper bracket due to the height of the tabs and sensor installed on the pad, preventing proper float.
- There is no release of tension off the piston once the brake pedal is lifted and the outer pad is jammed against the rotor due to improper installation.
- The disc overheats and could effectively be compromised.

In short, make sure the pads with the sensor are installed on the piston side of the caliper, and your caliper pins have more lube than an a first time Onlyfans performer for proper sliding.
