Retrofit 2022 GLE AMG 53 with Soft Close Doors?

Hello Fellas,

I picked up 2022 GLE AMG 53 but missed to add soft close door option. Has anyone done retrofit and point me to some leads/threads/ideas.

Thanks

interested in why you'd want to add/ retrofit this. I have it on my GLE and really don't notice how it works or what it's supposed to do... seems like an overcomplicated engineering solution for a problem that really doesn't need fixing

Why do it?

I can’t answer your question directly but I’ve had soft closing doors on different S classes and now my CL550, for over 25 years. Don’t like it. I hate the “clack” sound so mostly pull the door harder to avoid that tinny mechanical sound. My 97 S420 with pneumatic closing was better. Will order a GLE 63 S coupe when they become available and for sure won’t get soft closing doors (or heads up display). But some people like them. Just sharing my experience

As with most things MB adding the option requires hardware (door latch), control module and/or coding. To my knowledge dealers don’t code new options so you need to find a solution for that.

I have feeling it would be easier to order a new vehicle.

The SL550 that I bought off my dealer's lot has soft close doors. I would not have ordered them. The only benefit I see from them is that if I return into my garage late evening, my neighbor who has a common wall with my garage does not hear the car door close manually. In normal use, I mostly have to either watch the door close or listen for it to have closed to be sure that it is closed. Why bother with this gimmick? Put you $$$ into something useful like a high performance driving school session for yourself.

I disagree, I have had soft close on numerous cars and wouldn't go without. So effortless, a luxury feature for sure. Never have to look back and make sure the door shut. The upcharge is so nominal how much do you really save?

I'm glad that you appreciate this feature and I'm sure many other owners do also. It seems to me possible that unconsciously, owners, including myself, might really be listening for the click of those doors to actually close and lock (or listening for the assurance from the obnoxious audible locked vehicle horn beep -- what happened to the chirp?)

The "soft close" feature only works when the doors are within say, 2 inches or so of their closed position so you have to be sure that the doors are not open more than this. It is not like the headlight or interior lighting delay where you can leave the vehicle and you can be sure that the headlights and interior lights are going to extinguish after 10-15 seconds or whatever. I mean it is not like you can just exit quickly, leave the vehicle with the doors open wide and assume the doors are going to close. You have to close the doors almost completely anyhow. For me, this feature is just extra complication that is another source of failure, maybe good once or twice to show your neighbors and friends and perhaps not disturb them late at night.

It could be useful with sleeping toddlers, so you don't have to slam the door.

Had it on our 2020, but I ordered our '21 without door closing.
It reminds me of a German cup-holder - over engineered, with extra Points of Failure.
