Newbie Help

Hi all - I am a BMW X5M Competition owner considering an AMG GLE 63s - I’m new to the GLE and the brand except ownership of a 1991 300E. That said, looking for advice on MUST have features on an order…and of course any advice (especially observations from former BMW owners). Thanks in advance —-

Hi,
As I have a GLE63s on order and reverse your question. Why are you looking at the MB 63s? Thanks

I didn't think BMW had anything comparable to AMG? Looking forward to my 1st AMG (5th Mercedes).

Not sure if you are serious given I’m on a MB forum , but M is the comparable in BMW - for example, - BMW X5 m550i or X5M Competition - similar line up to AMG / AMG 63 / Audi S / Audi RS etc. Each brand has a Lite version (like AMG GLE 53) and a Full version (like AMG GLE 63s). In this case the BME X5M Competition is the competitor to the AMG GLE 63s.

Serious. None of those are comparable to AMG according to what I’ve read, but other experts to AMG may opine.

I have never owned a GLE AMG 63 s, so can’t compare as an owner - I drove one and liked it! It would be great to hear from folks who’ve owned / driven an X5M Comp for a comparison.

Are you shopping the Cayenne GTS and Turbo? No horrid EQ “hybrid assist” system like the MB. Caveat emptor on the EQ system, I wouldn’t touch it.

GTS and Turbo owners love their vehicles.

Step up to the Aston Martin DBX. It has some MB underpinnings...

Not yet - but the GTS is worth a look - that rand / options etc is very confusing to me.

48V systems haven't been a problem in the past year or so. Early quality issues were supply chain related (long story), and that seems to have been fixed in '21.
More cars are adopting them, because the advantages are significant.

There are technical advantages, but to me, 48V really improves the driving dynamics. Which is why I buy cars.

Not trying to offend but rather looking at it from a practicality standpoint. A lot of older generation MB tech and switchgear in the DBX. Not to mention it only has a three year warranty instead of four like MB. To make matters worse there are only 35 Aston dealers in the US versus 383 for MB. So unless you really love the car and live within close proximity to a dealer one should probably think twice. To me there is something to be said about a manufacturer that has to use someone else's powerplant/drivetrain and dated switchgear.

2023 MB GLE 63S SUV
In Reno there are many many SUV's and a lot of Cayenne's and BMW's. Both dealers and the Audi dealer seem to focus on SUV's and why not. But the MB dealer here doesn't have any GLE 53's or 63's and won't order...
at least when I inquired. I wanted A MB,not a Lexus,BMW or Porsche...I had a Porsche years ago and it stuck to the road like glue,but not enough HP. Anyway I'll have something different,and some just want that MB star....Like me.

To answer the OPs original question...I have never owned a bmw (though I've always crossed shopped it) because I feel Mercedes has always had a bit more luxury. I have a 2023 GLE53 with almost every option some of which is standard in the 63.

My must haves for a 63 would be:
- Driver assiatnce package plus
- Acoustic Package
- Air Balance Package (for the ionizer)
- Multi-contour front seats, specially for adjustable side bolsters

Nice to haves that I personally wouldn't order without:
- diamond stitched leather, much more premium
- Forged 22's, these complete the car
- heads up display, I barely use it but I love it when I do
- soft close doors, I hate when my passengers slam doors

Hope that helps.

that's sort of the point... the older switchgear works and can be addressed at indy mercedes shop after warranty

I get the reluctance... fortunately my Aston Martin dealer is only 30 minute drive for my service (i don't have DBX, but a Vantage.)

This is helpful ! Your nice to haves are on my must have list ! That said, of course, next question is 53 or 63? I have to drive the 53 - 99% of the time for me it's V8 or bust...appreciate the advice.

Just so you're aware, the Air Balance package eats up 1/3 of the smallish glove box. Cockpit storage gets smaller with every model.

2023 GLE53
I also own a 23 GLE53 with most all features as the other poster, so my recommended options for a GLE 63S would be:
1) Night package;
2) 22-inch AMG cross-spoke, matte black;
3) AMG carbon fiber trim;
4) Heads-up display;
5) 3D Burmeister sound;
6) Warmth and comfort package;
7) Driver Assist Plus;
8) AMG Ceramic brakes; and
9) Top diamond stitched Nappa Leather.

Things I'd consider:
1) Massage seats;
2) Four zone climate control; and
3) Heated second row seat.

Before jumping to the GLE53 I had a GLC43 and was cross-shopping. I actually considered the BMW X6M as well as the AUDI S8. Settled for the GLE53 by compromising speed in exchange for comfort/technology. I also wasn't too convinced on the looks of the X6 (prefer the old looks). Reliability is yet to be seen, but I have on 5 different Mercedes and have not had issues with them (knock on wood).

53 is slow compared to the 63, but what I learned with my GTR is that a slower car is MUCH more fun to drive. I can flick thru the paddles and actually feel like I'm enjoying the car without having to go 150 miles an hour. With the 53, you save on gas and on overall cost.

Really ? I'd agree for a smaller vehicle, but the V8 is so fun - so you opt for 53 over 63 ?

Yes I have a 2023 GLE53 Coupe with damn near every option except massage seats. If I knew that was the only way to get adjustable bolsters I would have gotten them.
