Cutting off the muffler - GLE63s To do or not to do....

Good morning everyone,

I've been thinking about removing the rear muffler from my car. The car, driven in a calm and normal manner, is very quiet most of the time. It does sound good under hard acceleration but when just puttering around town it does not sound like the monster it is. I have checked and I don't have the performance exhaust, so that may be the reason.

My question, I've heard MANY youtube videos of GLE63s with their mufflers cut off. It's really hard to tell on the phone whether it sounds good or is too loud and obnoxious. Has anyone here heard one with the muffler deleted? If so, did it sound good or was it too loud?

Thanks in advance.

Cut it off. If you don't like it you can always put it back on.

Well, I just had the exhaust shop cut the rear muffler off my GLE63s. They replaced the muffler with 3" pipe that looks great. I was worried it would be too loud but it sounds PERFECT. The exhaust is SOOOO much deeper and rumbly. You can also hear the turbo whistles so much more.
Driving in normal mode the car just sounds meaner but not loud. It's just slight louder than stock when cruising. However, when you get on the throttle, it has a wonderful deep growl. The exhaust pops are also so much more obvious. I'm so glad I did it and did not wait.

Please post a video. I’ve been considering this as well and would love to hear it.

I took the plunge and also joined in the muffler delete on my 22 GLE63s. Does not disappoint. Sounds great in comfort more and really comes alive in S+/Race.

No drone at all, glad I followed advice of @WikedV12

Did you shoot before and after videos? If so, please post or send us a link to them. I'm contemplating gle63s exhaust options as well.

Do you not have the performance exhaust either?

I do have the Performance Exhaust, doesn't have quite enough pizazz for me in S+. I saw the video of the Torrent Motorworks install of the Brabus sport exhaust (link below). Big fan, but not of the price tag (quotes I have gotten were over $7K).

Do you have photos of your new exhaust setup with the 3” tailpipe?

What is the cost for parts and labor associated with this modification?

I've been contemplating all of the options: resonator delete, muffler delete, going with either Armytrix or FI system including downpipes, or just going the simple route of throwing in a couple of electric cutouts in front of the resonator. Im curious if anyone has kept the stock system in place but threw in some cutouts before the resonator?

Is a muffler delete preferred here versus any resonator deletes?

Would do muffler delete and then, if not loud enough, do resonator delete. It's a turbo car so it automatically has a built-in muffler: the turbo.

I appreciate you for the reply. So you went from dual pipes to single on each side then.

Did you keep your valve plugged in or is it all open no valve for Comfort Vs Sport mode? So do you keep it open all the time now? Or how does that work?

No problem. There are single pipes that lead into the muffler, which is what I just continued all the way to bumper. The dual pipes are the output on the performance exhaust muffler and go away with the delete. With the delete, there is no plug and the button for the flaps does nothing since the flaps are gone with the muffler and now it is always open. The sound does change a bit between comfort and s+. Comfort is now live-able and S+/ race is what is in the video above. The pops/bangs are now like gun shots and a LOT of fun.

FWIW, I started with the Renntech EVM and still wasn’t thrilled with the sound of normal driving comfort mode. This delete cost $148 and was the best money spent yet on the car. I can always add it back in the future if needed or if I put on downpipes…

I find this to be preposterous. In addition, it's illegal to remove a muffler from a motor vehicle in my state. If you don't like the sound of the car, I suggest looking for something else.

People straight-pipe their cars (and trucks...) all the time, but how often do you think they get pulled over for it? And Lord knows most states aren't checking much, if any, of that on emissions checks. No OBD2 codes, no problem.

Cutting just the mufflers off is chump change in the grand scheme of things, especially on a forced induction car where it's probably going to be quieter anyway.

So no CELs or codes with removing the exhaust valves? Did u just zip tie the connectors out of the way? I too went the evm route and it’s just not enough.

No CEL or codes. In fact, the performance exhaust button still triggers the last valve in the h-pipe. I recently learned this when troubleshooting a rattle from the h-pipe that sounds like a more common problem in the c63 forum

connections are tucked above heat shield away if I remember correctly

Hey, I just did this to my GLE63S aswell. However I’ve quickly noticed the car is in LIMP mode and only uses half power (no CEL)

I asked the tuners that tuned my other AMG and they said you cannot just remove the muffler because the valves do a 360 check Everytime it turns on. Hence why it senses something wrong so LIMP MODE

im assuming you had the same problem, did you end up putting the muffler back in? Or how did you go about it? super bummed out. Watched your video and NEEDED to do it, but now seems like a waste of money and time.

according to my experience, don’t do it! It sure as hell sounds absolutely AMAZING. But I just learnt from my tuners that it’s just not possible. Unless you take out the valves out of the original muffler and leave them plugged in and hung above so it does the 360 check and thinks it’s okay. Which then isn’t reversible, just not worth the time. If you need more info message me: 604-617-9285
