GLE53 21" tires/winter options

I've read a lot of threads about winter tires for GLE's. My 53 is arriving soon. As I live in the hills of the Northeast I will need to swap out the performance tires to ether wither or all-season tires right away.

I ordered 21" wheels, and for whatever reason, could only get with performance tires. The good thing is, there are more options for tires vs. 22".

As I have the luxury of not having to head out in bad conditions, I was leaning towards all season. That brings me to the Pirelli Scorpion Zero A/S or the Michelin Primacy Tour A/S. I see lots of info on the Pirelli's, but does anyone have experience with the Michelin's?

If I went with winter tires, it would be the Pirelli Scorpion Winter. Then I'd just do the swap out Spring/Fall. I don't put on a lot of miles (sub 7k), so I was wondering if it was worth it.

Thanks

Just noting another all-season option...
I have these on my car and whilst I haven't driven in winter conditions yet, they ride and handle darn good.

I had the Primacy Tour A/S tires on my GLE450 and they weren't the greatest. I replaced them with the Cross Climate all weather and those were outstanding. I don't believe they offer the Cross Climates in 21" as I don't recall those being an option when I did the research. From what I've read, I would pick the Pirellis Scorpion Zeros A/S over the Primacy. I just installed them on my 63 and I'm very impressed so far.

I also have the option of staying put if the weather is bad so that was a big part of my decision to go with A/S tires vs doing the seasonal switcheroo.

thanks for the info!

I did a quick search on their website and noting came up for the 53 (21"). Too bad as over the years I've had good luck with Goodyear.

Thanks. That's definitely what I am leaning towards (the Pirelli Scorpion A/S). I have a couple of weeks to make up my mind.

I've had nothing but love and total success with ExtremeContact™ DWS06 Pluses on my GLE now and my E63 prior, but given that you've got hills (and probably more snow overall) to contend with, it feel like leaning toward snow performance/away from dry performance is probably the right choice. Plenty of cold weather here in the Midwest but not a ton of hills or super heavy snow, that's for sure.

Obligatory plug for TyreReviews on YT who does a damn good job reviewing as many of the million options out there in practically all the categories.

Tyre Reviews is very good. I also check the tire rack tests:

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...eMake=Michelin

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=272

Below are tire rack brake tests in one table that should give you an idea. I had the Primacy, but I don't remember the performance in snow as it is in the middle. Cross Climate with 3 peak mountain and snowflake (3PMSF) symbol is closer to winter tire Alpin 5 in snow performance, but then you loose on the dry/wet performance compared to Primacy or UHP tires...

Excellent info - thankyou! I hadn't found this, and I was on Tire Rack. Doing some further research. Many thanks.

Unfortunately, Tire Rack hasn't carried Nokian tires until Discount Tire bought them.

Which means that none of their tire reviews have included one of the leading winter and all weather Tire manufacturers.

TiresbyWeb is a superior tire supplier, with very knowledgeable humans, in Lansing Michigan, and a strong online presence. It's one of the longer Nokian dealers in the country. Check their site.

I just waned to post a follow up to this.

I did end up buying the Pirelli Scorpion A/S for my GLE53. The ride and handling has been very good the past two months. I have 2K miles on them. I have not noticed any added road noise.

Yesterday, we had a winter storm (our third of the season I believe) and got about 5" of the white stuff. I had an appointment that I had to go to, towards the end of the storm, long after the roads *should* have been reasonably dealt with. For whatever reason, little plowing or sanding, etc,. had been done anywhere I went. (schools had been cancelled for the day).

Anyhow, I am just here to say how impressed I was with how the vehicle performed with these tires. I drove about 50 miles round trip on varying road types (no highway). Most were not down to pavement. Any place that did was just tire ruts, but most were snow covered. I live at about 800' and came down to the "city", lol, on twisty back roads. An occasion slip around a turn, esp if I pushed it. But it felt pretty solid. I tried stock "I" mode and "Snow" mode (best). Used engine breaking down hill(s) where needed. A lot of the ride was seeing how it handled :-)

I would have been white-knuckled in my old CR-V.

I imagine it would have been amazing with full winter tires.

I wanted an every day driver for all of the weather conditions I live in, and I can say I have it. These tires have done the trick.

Great to hear some real wold experience with the Pirelli Scorpions. I spent a pile of cash on the 22" Scorpion all seasons then came across a great deal on a set of 21" AMG rims so I decided to play it safe this winter and installed 21" Scorpion snow tires. After reading your review, it does give me additional confidence if I get caught next year in snow with my all seasons then I'll still have decent traction. Thanks again for the review, it's super helpful.

I have 22” rims and just had Vredestein wintracs installed and they are great in the snow.
