2024 AMG GLE 53 HUD problems
#26
Took delivery on a 2024 AMG GLE 53 in August. Starting in November I started having Heads Up Display problems. First I would get warning message on the driver display reading "Heads Up Inoperative" and there would be no display on the windshield at all. Hours later and sometimes the next day after a number restarts, the HUD would be a jumbled mess of commingled colors, not legible, if anything just a distraction. Again after a number of hours or usually the next day, the HUD would appear to be operating normal. I took the car to the dealership in December and they said that the software had to be updated. Unfortunately one month later the HUD is not working and repeating the error message followed hours later with a display with the symbols in jumbled colors and the lines very blurry. I am taking it back to the dealer. If it is software wouldn't other people have a similar problem? The dealership now tells me that they have not this issue in other cars. Any comments would be appreciated.
PS I use the Driver Assistance a lot and you need the HUD to safely use the Driver Assistance as you can monitor the HUD for engaged green symbol without taking your eyes off of the road. The symbol of a steering wheel is green wihen it is engaged and turns white when it is not engaged. Note it will automatically disengage if the lane lines are not bright or the highway has construction areas.

I just picked up my car yesterday and the HUD display inop message came on on the way home. Not the way you want to start out.
Otherwise the ride home was fun with a bewildering array of things to try and figure out how to work.

I have the exact same issue, first it was the error message HUD inoperative, although it worked fine, however I've got the sketchy commingled colors later on, got fixed on its own after 30 minutes having the car stopped at a parking. Sad thing is this is accompanied by barely working Apple Carplay 50/50, when in manual the car will also get stuck in 4th gear on the open road making paddle shifters non-working, nor it'll change automatically. Ah yeah, and also all assists were not working at one point. This is all for the first three weeks of owning the car. Build quality doesn't feel right

Gleboshi, sorry to hear about all of the issues you have experienced. the HUD problem appears to exist even with cars that MB is delivering today. See comments above. This is very disappointing coming from MB. If MB wants to be a luxury car brand they need to acknowledge the problems, notify dealers and customers and fix it. I was told by the dealer that I was the only customer experiencing HUD issues. Well guess what, judging from the posts here, that simply is not true. I do not fault the dealer but it is giving me pause as I was planning to purchase an AMG GT55 this year. Maybe I need to reconsider my loyalty to MB AMG. I will not decide until I see how this plays out. So far, not feeling really good about MB as they seems way too distracted with EV that most MB owners simply do not want.

Oh and ofc I did not mention the interior napa leather dashboard having those crappy waves on it... but it is what it is, that is our first MB in the family, am a huge fan but it could be the last. My least hope is all these issues ain't coming from the problematic 48v system that pre-facelift used to have 🤞

Whatever other brand you're considering, it's a good idea to get on an active forum or two, to get an idea of what's being reported there.
I think it's important to spend enough time on a forum to get to know if there are some habitual complainers, so you know when to use that grain of salt.

Was it the upgraded leather dash/ that comes with the diamond stitch seats that you noticed waves? I've posed this question to others to see whether anyone else is having that issue, seems like the dash that comes with the diam. stitch is smooth. Just want to know what option / what's causing those waves.

Same problem as you guys. the HUD is not working even when I'm picking the car.
The funny part was, the salesman was proudly saying "Here's your HUD and it can be quite helpful", and there was nothing on my windshield.
Send the car back to the dealer, they claimed they did the software update, worked fine for a week, then completely gone again.
I've called MB customer service to address this issue and told them I'm quite upset.

sorry to hear about your HUD issues This problem has been going on for far too long. MB needs to inform customers of the issue and what they are going to do for a permanent fix. I have taken my car back twice to the dealer, once in early December and again in middle January. Both times told it was a software update. Since the mid January fix my HUD was not operating once in early February. The issue in February self corrected later in the day. Given my previous problems did not self correct until it sat overnight, seems like some progress. This is not what I expect from a $100k plus car and the MB AMG brand. If my HUD fails again, I will take it back to the dealer.

My dealer told me they could order a new HUD and replace it for me, simple and easy right? But without knowing what's really going on, no one can guarantee it is just a hardware issue, what if the problem still exists?
I told them for now no, I will bring my car in and get a reset and ask the dealer to escalate this problem ASAP.
I 100% percent agree with you, this is not even close to the quality it should be for something over 100k.
My first choice was the BMW X6 M60i, but my wife liked the GLE53, so I decided happy wife, happy life.

I don't have the AMG 53, but I do have a 2024 GLE 350 and had this issue today. I took my car to the car wash, HUD was working fine. Got home and had to run out again and I got the "Heads Up Display Inoperative" error message. Turned the car off and on again, same error message. Tried toggling it on and off in the instrument cluster settings and no change. Came out 10 minutes later, turned the car on and it was then working. I've had my 2024 for about a week and a half. (Bought it used with 1k miles from a BMW dealer)

2024 GLE53 Heads Up Display and Apple CarPlay
I ordered a 2024 GLE53 in April of 2023 and took delivery the last week of July 2023. I was sitting in the car and noticed the HUD was very blurry and let the delivery specialist know about it. He said "that's just how they are". Fast forward to today (March 28, 2024) and my car has been in the shop 5 of the 8 months I have owned it and is still in the shop with no solution. I've contacted the dealer and MBUSA for help. I can say that the dealerships have been more helpful than MBUSA. Melicie, the Executive Referral Manager I'm dealing with is worthless. She blatantly lies about not having my proper contact information despite leaving a voicemail and confirming my cell phone number in an email. She called my office and was extremely rude to my receptionist as well.
I've been told that there have been no other issues with HUD or Apple Carplay but that obviously isn't true after reading this thread. Has anyone had a resolution to the issue?
It's frustrating to buy a fully loaded AMG and have to drive a base model loaner. I'm open to any advice anyone has to try and get this resolved.

Add me to this list of people running into this issue. Took delivery of GLE 450e on March 3rd, issue started happening about a month later. It's very sporadic but I do notice it happened more when it rained and had the same jumbled display issue once.
Was going to bring into the dealer next time it happens but doesn't seem like they know what the actual issue is yet...

Hell kdbrotheron, sorry to hear you have had these issues too. You can tell from this thread that lots of new MB owners have experienced problems with the HUD. Very frustrating especially when MB prefers to not ackwoldge and own this problem. I took delivery of a $100K plus 2024 AMG MB 53. Within 60 days the HUD was not working. So in December of 2023 I was told that I was the only customer with this issue. My response was if this is case then it must be hardware and not software as everyone using this software would be having problems which they just told me I was the only one. Yet they refused to replace the HUD unit and said that it was a simple software update for the HUD system. 6 weeks later I had the same HUD problems. Took it back to the dealership in mid December and they said that it was a software update for the communication system between the HUD and the display. Okay since then I have had only one HUD problem and since it self healed after a stop at the grocery stere I have decided to take it back only if it goes back to being out all day and self healing after rebooting over night. So it has been nearly 3 months so maybe the last fix is helpful. We will see. Shame on MB AMG for treating their customers this way. I really think that they have lost their mission with their obsession with EV and they look at Tesla with self-driving that flat out is not reliable and is false adverting yet they have been held harmless by the courts and are getting away with it. FSD is fake. HUD does not work reliabliy.

So it sounds like the first software update didn't fix it but the second one did without having to replace the HUD. In 3 months since the 2nd software update, you have not had the issue come back. TBH, that's good they didn't have to open your entire dash to physically replace the HUD. A whole host of other issues (besides cosmetic) could happen with that process, like rattles, pinched wires, loose connectors.

I just found out this last weekend that the supposedly fixed the issue. They have since found out that the windshield was causing the issue and they have replaced the entire windshield now. I'm more than frustrated with the entire process going on for nearly 6 months that they have had the car. I HOPE this fixes the issue and doesn't cause any other issues like you listed above. I have contacted MBUSA and they won't consider my car for repurchase of buyback. Talking to someone is almost non-existent and not helpful. They won't offer any goodwill or compensation for the 6 months the car has been at the dealer until I get the car back and it's fixed. Definitely the last Mercedes I'll ever own.

Today my instrument cluster stopped working while I was driving. Yep left the house all was fine, 10 minutes later it went black. Tried to turn it off and turn it back on, no change a black screen. Also my HUD has failed twice since my last fix in mid January for HUD defect. Frustration is not the right word. Taking it back to the dealer to fix both issues. This will my third trip back to the dealer because the HUD fails and does not work and now even worse the instrument cluster goes black. This is a safety issue. Wake up MB. I am longtime MB customer now I am questioning the MB and AMG brand.

Happened to me for a 2nd time since I bought the car in March. Came out of work, turned on my car and got the "Heads Up Display Inoperative" message again. It's so frustrating. I guess I'll take it to MB but if it's working when they test it, I'm not sure they will figure out what is causing it. One of the reasons why I got my GLE was for the HUD. I'm going to wait 10 minutes and try again. Thats what happened the first time this happened. I kept getting the message then 10 or 15 minutes later, I started it up again and it started working.

mine is at the dealership now to fix the HUD issue and the instrument cluster going black while driving. They have had it now almost a week and I have not heard a word. this is my third time in the dealer service department to fix this issue. I will let you know what I find out.

This issue is effecting other models as well. I found threads on other forums for various models that have reported the same thing.

I emailed MB customer support about the issue. I pointed them to this thread and the few others I found about people having the same issue. I think more people experiencing the issue should let them know about it.
