Would already have my deposit on one if there were a diesel being offered. Couldn't, given the current climate, be happy with the so-so mileage of the gas model.

I'm with you on that, I would love to unload my C, but I would get thrashed in the resale. Plus its paid for so I'll most likely stick with the normal plan and keep it 4 years or 50k miles which ever comes first. Works out that I would be able to get a second model year GLK and hope all the kinks are worked out by then.
As for the GLK it all depends on what prices they decide to set. At or around $40k doesn't sound too bad for a nicely equipped GLK 350 4matic, but if I have to drop more coin than that I could easily get an ML or even better another R class for a bit more.

I've got to say that while I like a lot of the styling cues of the GLK and do enjoy my own GL320, with BMW's X5 coming across as a turbo-diesel, replacing my wife's RX330 will become something more of a question mark.
There's some discussion of BMW versus MB diesels on the GL forum. Anyone else here want to chime in?

Got the new issue of Car and Driver today, has an article on the GLK. They got to drive one around, lucky bastids..lol. Anyway they report a base price of $36k which sounds pretty good. They claim that price includes 4matic but I feel leary of them saying this as they also claim a panoramic roof is standard and we all know thats never been the case with a Benz. It is a 350 and if it holds true to C class options it should have P1 as standard equipment though. This would be a nice price range because after a year or so the discounts will bring it down to around $34k-$35k for a nicely equipped P2 model. Hope those Car and Driver numbers hold up...but I believe it when I see it on a window sticker.

I would consider this "soft roader" if the 34 mpg diesel were offered. MBUSA needs to rethink their customer's point of view. Being offered the "off road" performance package would also be welcome. It's not just soccer moms that are buying.
