Importing a GLK350 from the US to Canada
I am looking into importing a used GLK into Canada and am curious if anyone else has imported one. I am curious exactly what needs to be changed to make a US vehicle compliant in Canada. ie...daytime running lights, speedo cluster, child tethers etc. I know when I brought back my Touareg there was nothing that had to be changed however I know manufacturers differ in what they request. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Best of luck, cluster I dont think is an issue since you can switch between both. Day lights can be turned on as well in the US, the only thing I am not sure of is the child tethers?

Imported vehicles from the USA must have a cluster with kph, 8mph bumper absorbers (US is 5 but I'm sure a MB exceeds anyway's) daytime running lamps and a child seat tether which does not have to be installed the last car I did it was still in the package in the glove box. Also no brand new cars are allowed has to be at least six months old. There is also a link in the federal gov't website that list's all vehicles that are allowed for import. All inspections are done at Canadian Tire stores and take about 3 minutes.

It appears that you'll need an MB inspection which can be quite expensive. Plus pay duties because it's not made in USA. However, with current exchange rates it may still be worth the trouble importing.
I would just get the VIN and ask an MB dealer here if you can import it and have them give you a quote to do what needs to be done to pass.

They have notes stating that MB's have to be modified by MB only and Must have MB's authorized douments, remeber those are manufacturer documents not dealership.

I remember asking my dealer once and he said when it's all said and done you end up saving a few hundred dollars at most so it's not even worth the hassle.
That's true also if you look at the mbusa sight an equivalent loaded GLK is on equal ground in terms of pricing except it's USD so technically after the exchange rate conversion it's more expensive.

Just to clarify, I am a vehicle importer importing vehicles regularly. US vehicles do not need to have odometer showing KPH (inspection station will give you speed indicator stickers that they suggest you apply but it is not necessary), there is no longer a bumper requirement, there is no age minimum for imported vehicles as you can import new ones if you wish. There are however a few vehicles that are disallowed from importing which are listed in gov't website. The duty to be paid is 6.1% of Canadian dollar value equivilent if vehicle is not manufactured in North America. MB needs to provide you with a recall clearance letter. For this to be done, all modifications (such as DRL) must be done at MB dealer before letter is given out. This is also a requirement for the warranty to be valid. GST is also paid at import time as it was never collected on the vehicle sale. A small import fee of $195 is paid to gov't to import the car. Also, things like A/C tax and gas tax must be paid as they have not been paid to the gov't yet. That pretty much is it. Of course transportation, licensing etc would be incurred.

The recall letter that's what I was trying to think of. I haven't imorted in a few years. Don't forget about the air bage inspection, the guy turns the key to on and watches to see if the light goes out...lol.
