Yeah that makes a ton more sense now. I priced one out before on the US website. Always knew vehicles cost less in the States but DAMN!

I just noticed my breaks making noise also... the cold *** weather probably has something to do with it.

I will wash the car this weekend and see if the squeal is still there...

Unfortunately my brakes have begun to squeal like no tomorrow as well at very low speeds. It's down right annoying Last thing I want is for my new car to come to a crosswalk and break eardrums.

I contacted the dealership and they will take a look at it again. The problem is getting pretty bad. I think they might have to change the break pads and even rotors. It is scheduled for December 17th so I will let you guys know how it goes.

Yea the squeaking has gotten REALLY bad now, everytime I lightly depress the brake to bring the car to a slow under 20kmh or so it will squeak and squeal like no tomorrow.
It's driving me crazy, I don't get it. I've driven numerous cars in the past and have never experienced this problem before.

I'm taking it to the service center today after work to slap them around about the condensation in my headlights and will get them to address the squeaky brake issue as well.

I'm just at 300 miles and the brakes are also beginning to make the noises at low speeds. Kind of surprised at this as my Eclipse never did this and the wife's lincoln that we just bought is noise free as well.

When the service associate called me today regarding headlight condensation I told him about the brake squealing at low speeds.

He said something about the brake compound being harder or something where it was produced. So after about a minute or two of me listening I made an appointment with him to take my GLK in today after work to have the brake pads changed out (it sounded like this is a known issue because he did not hesitate to book me in and have a loaner ready for me).

So, hopefully after the service the problem will be gone with my new buttery brake pads

The downside? Probably get a Smart Fortwo as a loaner

Cheers everyone!

Just called my service rep. Was told that there was only a memo out stating they would use brake cleaner and if I keep coming back because they keep making noise than they would replace them. He also said more people need to come forward for MB to issue a recall or replacement memo.

Where's your location? And which dealer is servicing you?

I'm actually quite satisfied with their proactive offer to fix my problem.

I have 1400kms and my breaks are squeaking, too. This will add to my list when I bring the car in for service.

I just got home. I showed up at service and the head mechanic went for a ride around with me and he heard the crazy squealing.
Left the car there overnight they will replace the pads for me in the morning and whatnot. Free detailing too

The loaner they gave me was a Toyota Corolla...man...when I got in...I died a little bit inside. lol
I had to run an errand after so I park the Corolla, get back to it and find that I left the lights on cuz it's not automatic. I went to open the door by grabbing the handle and it was locked, and I'm like **** no keyless? I get in and I go to press the ignition button only to find there isn't one. I tried to use the turn signal and ended up batting at air because it's placed so damn high. Not to mention the interior was awful...worst ergonomics ever.

I know, I know, I've been spoiled...but WTB my car back. I miss it already!!

Yea for some reason all the loander vehicles here in Richmond Service in BC are crappy Toyotas or Smart fortwos. At this point I wish they gave me a smart car instead

Awesome Kamen. Good work.

It sounds like they will be changing my breaks as well. I am sure this is covered under warranty so I won't have to pay anything. Now I have to wait till the damn 17th.

Went in to see the SA today. He said he pressure washed the pad/rotor area and then been some anti-noise stuff on there. Said to let him know if it persists. I told him that I was sure it would but seeing as I only have 300 miles on the car I would just come back in another 300 so MB understands that it is not just a break in thing and that it is actually the brakes. Nevertheless the guy was nice enough and the starbucks coffee and breakfast items were a nice touch while I was waiting. I also mentioned the whistle sould heard from passenger side while driving. Unfortunately I couldn't recreate the noise but told him it's only sometimes and I'm sure it has to do with the way the wind is blowing agaist the car. He said they have to hear it to verify.

Out of curiosity, those whos brakes are getting replaced, what are you telling your SA and what types of responses are you getting back?

Wow.... we have no noises.... not yet anyways.... squeaky brakes when driving usually happens when the pad guides rust or become too dirty to allow the pads to *float* freely when the brakes are not engaged. This prevents the pad to separate from the disc fully causing the pad to resonate or vibrate at a high pitch.

If the brakes make noise when applied, the pad material and the rotor may not be compatible, the pad or rotor is glazed over, or the pad never had a chance to break-in properly.... (you all know that all brakes have a 500-1500 mile break-in period where you're not to use any heavy braking or hard stops when the car is new) What happens is that the pad material doesn't *bite* the rotor properly (because it's glazed, incompatible, etc.) so again it vibrates and/or resonates as it skips on the rotor in high speed causing the pad base to squeal against the caliper piston head.

If they do replace your pads, make sure you insist that the rotors be "turned" as well or resurfaced at least. This is the only way to insure that the pad can properly *seat* with the rotor, but this time make sure you take it easy on the brakes for the first 1k miles or it will happen again, especially if they're using the same OEM pads that came on the car.)

You can do this or you can install Teflon silencing shims behind the pads... these are sold at most part stores.... (do not use the goop found in tubes and cans)... You may wish to look at post #5 in this thread.

I'm picking my car up today after work. I told the SA that my brakes would squeal when apply the brakes at low speeds, he went for a ride a long and confirmed it and replaced the front brake pads after further diagnosis.

The Foreman said that the original brake compound is too hard and causes the squealing at low speeds and replaced them. I've been driving normally and lightly since I took delivery, nothing harsh, no sudden accelerating or stopping, always in C mode. The car has about 1450km on it so far.

The problem started a couple weeks ago so I figured I would get it looked at asap.

Hey Kamen, so how are the new breaks? I realized other day that my breaks didn't make any noise while they were wet. But for the last 2 dry days the noise is back. I am hoping changing pads and rotors would help. I can not stand this noise.

I am hoping for Ceramic brake pads to be developed for the GLK. It would likely solve the squeaky brake syndrome AND bring the brake dust (which is *(^&%^$^ ridulous on a 2010 car) under control.
The brake pads currently used on the GLK uses sintered steel. The Ceramic pads (as used on other MBs) use sintered copper.

So far so good, no more squeaks

I think they changed the pads to what the other MBs were using as they said the stock ones were made of a compound that was too hard.

does that mean we should all get our pad swaped?

Kamen, could you please maybe share the experience, or any documents? so that we can get it printed and shown the dealer if our brakes have the same problem? Will save a lot of time explaining...

That "could" be ceramic pads as several other MBs use them. Watch for brake dust and keep us informed.....and if you could.....do you have the part # of the new pads?
