Gas Mileage

I have 900kms on my GLK and I have been averaging 17 L/100kms or 14 MPG.

A tank of gas will get me almost 400kms. I do all city driving in comfort mode. The factory specs says 13.3 L/100kms city. I am not a street racer, I just drive normal. Will it get better after break-in period ?

I know someone is gonna say if you can afford a MB, you should not worry about the gas mileage. I am just curious what others are averaging with their gas mileage.

ya know....there is city driving and there is city driving.
I do what I would call "suburban" driving.
Traffic lights are typically 1 mile apart for instance, and speed limits vary from 30 to 45 MPh, with the majority @35MPH.
Most streets are boulevards with medians, and many times 2 lanes in each direction.
Still on my first tank and have no idea how accurate MB's fuel computer is, but it shows 16.2 MPG (I'll let you do the conversions

So, of course if you are in city-city conditions with stop signs and traffic lights every block......it would have to be worse.....

I am hoping to get better mileage than claimed.
Simply because of the convenience.
I don't know what other cars you guys drive, but I consider a 17.4 gallon tank to be quite small.
If you couple that with poor mileage, I will be in a gas station more often than I wish..

I first got the car beginning of August 2009 with 10 miles on it and I now have driven 3,724 miles. Since my last reset, it show 3156 miles and I am at exactly at 20.0 MPG. I live in the suburbs as well and half the time I am on the highway so that probably accounts for my good mileage. I also noticed Driving at 60, I seem to get the best mileage, reaching as high as 23.8 but at 65 I drop down to 22.5. In the suburban streets, I will generally get 16 or 17 as I drive.

I get approx 375km before the gas light comes on with city driving. Hwy is quite a bit better.

Does anybody know how exactly many litres are left when the gas light comes on? Seems like about 7-8L to me... so that should go about another 50km.

Keep in mind that fuel mileage ratings are always averaged out by the manufacturer. Even NHTSA's ratings on your window sticker is an average. Lead footed people will always have lower mileage. Issues such as quick starts and stops, fuel make and type, tire pressue, the smoothness of the road, the temperature and density of the air, even holding the steering wheel off center at a traffic light (except on newer VW's with electro-assisted steering) will contribute to reducing your overall mileage.

Therefore it's frutile to compare mileage because no two drivers nor their environment are the same...

And YES, if you followed the break-in period rules, you will see a significant improvement in fuel mileage sometime after 10,000 miles.

MBRedux,

thanks for the tip.
In your opinion, what is proper break-in?

I have over 11,500 km on my GLK, the avg mileage is 12.89L/100km so far, 70% local and 30% highway. The best I got was 9.6L/100km on a 400km highway drive (avg 110km/h). I average between 12L to 15L per 100km on a daily 30km commute to work depends on the traffic.

I would follow what in the owners manual... simply, don't over do the revs, no full throttle starts but don't baby it either for the first 1000 miles. I also try and use moderate engine breaking going down hills during the first 200-400 miles. This forces the piston rings against the walls of the cylinder making sure they seat very well. I also change the oil at 1000 miles regardless of what MB thinks. That's my opinion.

...just what I had in mind...
How do you find all "down hills"? where do u live?
Yes, I am thinking of changing the oil@ 1.5K = 1K miles approx. However, the dealers are against it stating that the MB factory places a 'better oil and lubricants for the break-in period'. Not who's right or wrong.?

Around 4,500 miles and I'm showing 15.1 L/100 KM = 15.6 MPG.

I haven't reset the fuel mileage computer since the GLK was picked up so that figure includes the break-in period. Roughly 50% autobahn, 30% rural and 20% suburban travel.

When you say autobahn...is this a sedate 70/75 MPH.......or are you at 200KPH or more?

Varies between 130 - 190 kph. I drive the Porsches faster but 190 kph is about it in the GLK. It really sucks down the fuel at the higher speeds...that .35 cd takes its toll.

Ahhhhhhh yes.... Deutschland... where real driving is still respected... I'll be in Heidelberg soon after Christmas on business... then driving down to Muchen... then going with friends for a few days of Alpine skiing... then home to where driving is no longer respected.

Can't wait!

Close to 3,000 km's on mine. I probably do 60:40 split between highway and city driving. I am showing a steady 12.5L / 100km.

No complaints with the gas mileage from my side...I used to have a 5.7L V8 Hemi (Chrysler 300), so spending less at the end of the day
