Getting Sirius

I did not get Sirius in my GLK but still notice the sharkfin on the roof of my car. Does anyone know if it I can go the best buy route and buy a receiver? Would they be able to use the sharkfin as the antenna or would they have to add another? I know if I called I could get the anwser but it's 2:30 a.m. and I am at work, so I just figured I would throw up a post and see if anyone else has gone that route. Thanks!

you need to activate sirius. call sirius with your vin number and they will activate for you. you should get 6 months free service after that you will need to renew your suncribtion.

good luck

This will not work if he didn't purchase the Sirius Radio option... read the original post.

Sure... don't pick it as an option when you order your GLK!

I don't get it ... your question that is.

My point is that sirius is on every Mercedes now. I didn't think you could get one without. Thanks...

For the US model, the Premium 1 package contains Sirius. That said, if you got the premium package then you have the Sirius capability. You get a trial subscription to the service (6 months I believe) after which your service will be disabled and you will need to pay and subscribe to get satellite radio. If you didn't get the premium package, your GLK "as is" cannot get satellite radio.

In Canada, the Sirius option is standalone. If you didn't pay the $400 or so to get it, again your GLK "as is" cannot get satellite radio.

BTW: Sirius and XM are now the same... you get both with the option.

Right, so I guess what I am asking is considering I did not get the the P1 or Multimedia package, does anyone know if they could use the current shark fin for the installation? I have never bothered with adding to a vehicle of mine before so I do not know how the process would be. Best Buy isn't answering their phones so I cannot get my answer that way either.

Doubtful, from my understanding the fin is just a cap for the actual antenna. The fin also houses the gps antenna and the tel aid antenna if so equipped.

By the way, my dealership sells quite a few base model GLK's for the simple fact at that price you can get a GLK for nearly what a loaded CR-V costs. I wouldn't mind getting a base GLK if there was any way of adding the homelink to it, but sadly its cheaper to buy P1 than try to add it as a stand alone.

Wow, just read that...not sure the implication but I cerainly fall into that "who would ever buy it" catagory. It is possible to buy a great automobile without needing all the options.

Wondered if I was the only one who saw the incredible arrogance in that comment.

Spoke with best buy on the phone today. Should be headed up there on Monday to see what my options are. They do have a receiver that would allow me to get the al a carte package that Sirius offers. That would suit me much better as I usually only listen to the sports and a few of the music channels. The rep said the unit is less than a $100 and installation usually runs about $80. The only thing that would make this a deal breaker is if they can't do it without running exposed wires everywhere.

Radio Shack had a Sirius on Black Friday with a car kit for $29.99. You might still even be able to find it for less than std pricing. Worstbuy is not to be trusted. They also won't integrate.

But then again if that is the only option.....

I just had Homelink installed at my local stereo store, Car Tunes.
$199.99 + tax.
They merely put the universal Homelink between the headliner and the roof.
Wired the power into the dome light.
Only thing that shows is the 3 mini buttons.
Works good. Has about a 150 foot range.
Works with standard and rolling code receivers.

I bought this car as a grocery getter and a car to go to lunch in.
We have a nice luxury car for more formal occasions.

I can certainly see how this car could function quite nicely as the primary, or only, car in a household. I just love it.

I did have two things tho that were must haves.
iPod (which it came with) and Homelink.
A phone call from the salesman's desk to Car Tunes and that was arranged.

does anyone know if I can get the factory Sirius installed at the dealer?
When I bought my GLK, I didn't want the premium pkg 1 so I just got the sunroof and COMMAND NAV. I think they added Sirius as a stand alone option for units produced after June 2010.

Oh this is great news! This topic has popped up on here before, with most of us just wanting to add the mirror with the homelink buttons, but being told that it requires wiring that wouldnt be present in a non P1 car. This option looks real clean and a lot less expensive than some of the MB estimates I've seen floating around.

just to follow up, there are vehicles without the sirius tuner on all lots, as some dealers bring in the stripped down version because people are walking away from their domestic and import vehicle brands to come to MB... as they are being more and more affordable

the sirius tuner can be retrofitted into the vehicle but it will be pricey. the shark fin does not have the sirius antenna in it if you did not order the sirius

it also houses, nav and the telaid antenna's

as for the best buy route or the radio shack route... it will never be integrated... and comes down to extra modules on the dash... and with my previous comment about domestic and imports ... I have been seeing more and more crap in the MB's stuck to the windshield, dash, or air vents.

And they call that German engineering?

what does German engineering has to do with giving you everything you didn't purchase?
Oh, so that you can just get your own radio and use a more complicated and expensive receiver?

there can easily be 5 version of these shark fins...and all you have to do is to pay...for upgrades.

obviously you didn't get the P1 package because the cost of the vehicle went up... now imagine if the base model price went up because of the antenna... I guess you came over from an Asian vehicle manufacturer previously... the vehicles that need to stick all the gadgets possibly to overshadow the crap design...????!!!!!!

I'm am not going to get it if it can't be low key. I also dislike the radar detector, stick on GPS, and other electronic devices with wires everywhere. We shall see what they can do.

Well, you are right. But I am flabbergasted, having worked with Automobile assembly lines, that there would be a modern day system that had a build sheet (Bar code/RFID, etc) that would call for somebody to mount a hollow, non functioning Shark Fin.
At least they could have body colored the thing....
