Unhappy Moldy Mildew Smell in GLK A/C System

Anyone else had a problem with their GLK air con / heating system putting out air that smells of mold/mildew? It only seems to happen when the a/c compressor cycles on. I've read up and it sounds like it could be a plugged evaporator pan drain tube, but after 3 repeat visits, repeated checking of the two internal filters and an apparent inspection of the drain tube, they say all looks ok. If anyone has any advice, perhaps I can give more pointed instructions to the service center staff as to what to look for. I suspect they may need to open up the evaporator pan and demonstrate that it isn't full of mold - but they seem reluctant to take it that far. I have absolutely no other explanation for it, as the car is as clean as the day I bought it and I can't seem to convince the service center that there is a problem worth further exploring!! There goes my nice new-car smell...

Try running the car for a few minutes with the air con off before you shut down?

I had the same problem....I changed the cabin filters and then used a can of Frigi-Fresh. Got it at my dealer, $6.95...can says kills bacteria and freshens A/C Systems.

Worked like a charm....left a fresh smell that vanished after a few days....not a cheap air freshener stink.

Yankee Candle makes a "Car Jar" air freshener called Leather that is absolutely that " New Car Smell "...

This happens from time to time... most times it is a clog in the evap pan drain but nowadays it's condensation build up, especially when you keep the car outdoors, or in a cold non vented damp garage and then turn your heat on full blast as soon as you start the engine. This condensation runs down stream and will puddle inside the closed air system somewhere. Over time this will cause mold to grow.... I have seen it with my own eyes and have cleaned many of my other cars... so far the GLK is okay.

You can check your cabin filter or add some type of cosmetic smell to the car, but the odor will be there until you can find the source.

Good luck and try not to turn on your heater so soon, wait awhile as you drive for the engine to heat up fully, then open your heater system. Also you may wish to air out the system with fresh air to circulate through it once in a while. Don't keep it *closed* to the outside air either. Blend the heated air with some external fresh air as well.

Agree with a previous poster. Go to your local parts store and buy two cans of A/C cleaner/conditioner, ('fridgi-fresh'). Follow the instructions re: squirting the product both with the HVAC system in recirc and outside air mode. It will work great. Also I would leave the HVAC in 'Auto' mode as the heater won't come on straight away.

Exactly. As I posted else-where recently regarding this problem, I have the habit of turning the AC off when I'm about a mile from my destination. I do this consistently. My 8 year old RX-8 has no AC orders, nor does our 7 month old GLK. This technique gives the AC system a chance to dry out.

On the other hand, my wife drove the car we traded in on our GLK and the AC system had that typical nasty musty smell. She left the AC on, right up to the point of parking the car. Never could get her to remember to turn it off a mile or so from home.
