Thinking about selling my new 20"

Just bought a 2010 GLK350, unforunately for us Canadians, I had to take the 20.
The MB dealer quoted me
8.5 X 20 front for CAD$863
9.5 X 20 rear for CAD$1068
Local price on the Pirelli Scorpion Zero A 235/45/R20 is CAD$376.95
and 255/40/R20 is unknown, they only have the Bridgestone which is CAD$327.95

By my estimate my rim and tires are over $5K, and I know my wife will run into the curb in no time.

So, I have bought myself a set of 19 inch rim and tires from Tirerack for less than USD$1K, I figure with shipping and tax/duty it might be close to $1.5K and replacement Bridgestones are only $170. So in the long run it will definitely save me a bundle $$$.

I will drive from the dealer directly to the tire shop and have them swap out for the 20s.

My question is "Should I keep the 20 inch or sell them"
Thanks for the advice.

Does your speedometer have to be recalibrated for the 19" wheels?

I got the 235/50R19, so the math works out to a diameter of 28.252 inches, same as the US version. No need to recalibrate.

my question is why not get 18's? I would keep 20's as you won't get much for them unless you can find somebody who wants them. But they'll bump up your resale value later on as they are original rims that will be brand new.

Also, there is alway wheel and tire insurance. For $1k in US they cover rims and tires for 5 years.

To F18BEN, you always should keep the same overall diameter to avoid any callibraions, as EPS and ABS would also need calibration. The way it works is when you decrease size of the rim you increase the tire sidewall (thickness between rim and ground) and vice verso when ppl go to 22's.

why not 18, because my wife does not want it to look too different from OEM ( vain? :-))
And Tirerack had the 19s on sales for $69 (cheap on my part)

I'll buy them. How much are you willing to part with them for.... Keep in mind you'll never get back dealer cost on that stuff... just check e-bay... missed out on the same package three weeks ago.

I know that... but why is it "unfortunate"?

f4rush, my wife has been driving mine and so far so good. She will get used to it and will be fine.. Personally I would buy smaller rims to prevent these from becoming damaged. What is to say she won't curb rash the others. its ur call at the end of day. I have winter 17's and can't wait to put my 20's back on.

GLK350-premium pks,Bi-zenons,NAVI,OEM Hitch, Stepboards etc..
If selling price is reasonable then I wish to buy.

I live in Ottawa, CANADA. Where are you?

Or OEM MB 19inch tires & wheels + extra $$$
Mine is now 8,200 km and no scratch wheels and tires.

I was worried about wrecking the 20" rims as well, but I don't think it really matters 18", 19" or 20", if you scrub a curb, they will all be damaged!
The difference between an 18" rim and 20" rim is only 1" of rubber. That is still not enough to clear a normal curb.

What I was concerned about is if you hit a pot hole, the rim itself may get bent?

that's not 100% true

Smaller rims are also narrower while tire width is the same, so you have sidewalls bulging out more which prtects the rim. Also extra hight of the tire would make tire as tall as smaller curbs.

That's why I was surprized that 20's are an inch wider than 19's but tire size is the same...we need 255 on 20's not 235.

Too bad your wife decided to keep them... but that may be the wisest choice.... you will never get 80% of dealer retail for them plus shipping... (unless the buyer doesn't know what they're doing) since many here now know that they could buy a brand new set of those exact OEM 20" wheels with Pirelli's installed for $3600 delivered... you just got to know where to go.

Keep them for summer fun and buy a set of snow tires on 18" aftermarket wheels for the winter, that's what we and many here have already done.

Good luck and have fun in your new GLK when it arrives!
