Would be my luck some tailgater distracted by talking on a cell phone would run into that rack. You almost need a red warning flag denoting an overhanging load.

Unless you put the bikes on the roof rack (that will cause other problems - bike falling on car), it doesn't matter which hitch rack you buy, it will stick out. There are brake lights available to attach to the bike rack, I will go shopping tomorrow.

Yea, a three-bike rack is going to eat up some space. And you're right about the "other problems"...witness a picture in our local newspaper last summer showing the predictable result of a tourist driving into an underground parking garage with two bikes lashed to the top of a car. The result of that brain fart wasn't pretty!

I must say though, yours looks to be a very well-made rack.

you need some nicer looking bikes mate!

looks good, and like it was a fairly painless install. i've been doing some thinking about a bike rack, and since i already have the cross bars (i bought the ski rack this winter), i might end up getting it...but i'm a little hesitant. Little comparison below (pros and cons of rear bike rack), maybe some of you can add to based on your experiences:

Pro: not having to lift bike UP high to mount it, less chance of damage to car from falling bike
Con: can't open tailgate, sticks out - potential concern while parked or brain farts

The bike rack looks good. Do the kids complain about the seating room in the back? I realized soon that there's not a lot of room in the back seat for adults, but when you drive alone during the week who cares

Hello GLKster,

That's a nice looking rack. Is it aluminum or stainless steel frame? Is there a way to swing the bikes out of the way to allow opening of the rear hatch?

THanks!

The rack is stainless steel.
This rack can tilt down, and the hatch should open, I'll take a pic.

This rack can also fold up nicely against back of car when not in use with bikes.

I have one raincheck from Canadian Tire for this rack $119.
If any local Vancouver member is interested, please PM me and I'll give you the raincheck.
I only have one. First come, first serve.

More pictures added. Tilt the bike rack down a little and the rear hatch opens. The rack can also fold up nicely when not in use.

Thanks for sharing, will look into this for my GLK. Would be interested to hear any followup notes you may have after you have had a chance to use it for a bit.
