How well do these tow?

The wifey and I are thinking about getting a GLK but one thing it has to do is tow halfway decent. We both race motorcycles and have a small open trailer that would be maybe 2,000 lb's loaded. I see the max rating is 3500 but I have found towing near the max of a vehicles tow rating usually sucks as the vehicle has to shift constantly and generally struggles. I know these have pretty decent horsepower so I would think it would do OK, but what about the suspension? Right now we have a 3/4 ton Chevy duramax which obviously can tow a house but we are downsizing our racing effort and don't have a huge trailer and won't be doing much long distance towing anymore. We want something more luxurious but sporty and a lot smaller. The truck we have now BARELY fits in the garage and its a big waste for what we are doing now. Who here has towed very much with theirs and how do you think it handled it?

I've done that and found a lot on buying hitches, wire harnesses, oem vs after market etc.. Not much on how it actually tows. Seems like most people worry about using it for a bike rack.

Thumbs up Very well indeed

Very well....I tow my jet boat (3000lb) with no problems.

I also did a 2000lb pick up from a shipyard that needed a forklift to move with no problem.

see pics

PS: I love this truck....utility & looks

Hey no problem. I know how annoying it is on the motorcycle forum when every other day there is a 'what oil is best' thread haha!

Smile thanks. By the way, its a smooth tow too

Here is a pic when I did a 20km tow for our lake window (10ft x 10ft of glass). Crazy but it made it all the way, very smooth ride.

Well it looks like we should be fine. I really wish they brought over the diesel ones as I have a soft spot in my heart for them but I guess I could get over it. The ML with the diesel is starting to come down in price but I just cant get over how they look compared to the GLK, plus the amount of towing we will be doing will be quite a bit less it looks like.

I have towed a trailer of soil, usually 1,500ish lbs. No problems driving pulling it. Barely noticed it was there. I usually drive in manual mode while hauling something - no issues here.

I have the factor trailer hitch, but while the GLK can handle a class 2 hitch (3500 lbs), it comes with a class 1 (2000 lbs).

This past summer we towed the largest, enclosed, double wheel U-haul trailer 550 miles when we moved my son to Boulder, CO. The GLK pulled the 'rig' easily and in a very stable manner. I was impressed.

Well we went and finally drove one this afternoon. Pretty cool little rig-it will take a lot of getting used to towing with that haha! I'm not completely convinced on it quite yet. Not sure I want to use that to go to a dirt bike race and drive it through a field, and while it is fairly roomy I find myself wanting to get something a little bigger with a V8 at least. We'll see!

Not yet-I was swamped with work most of this month so I am just now starting to look again.
