Traction control.

At risk of being called various names by youngsters who know it all, I'll ask an old man's dumb question. My daughter was driving me to Vanderbilt the other day and it was raining quite hard. She was traveling 65-70. (I know, I know). Anyway the car suddenly felt like it applied the brakes for an instant, then resumed speed. It did it again soon after. Never did it again. Was that the traction control perhaps sensing one of the drive wheels was starting to hydroplane?

Probably... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuSJ2...eature=related It could also be a combination of the ASR and the new Adaptive Brakes system as well....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J9NDF_-tN0

Thanks, that explains it. Of course my wife asks the unanswered, "Do the brake lights go on?" Ya gotta luv 'em.

You sure the car wasn't hydroplaning? Usually it feels as if brakes were applied. Just a thought, considering the rain

Actually, y'all said slightly different things. First was "brakes applied to stop hydroplaning." The second was "hydroplaning feels like the brakes were applied." Got it?
Was the cruise control on?

I need to have my wife follow me (or vice versa) on the hills leading to the house & find out for sure if the cruise control induced braking makes the brake lights come on.

Did the yellow triangle blink?

I haven't seen ESP (traction control) come on during hydro planning or even during driving on slush. If you are driving straight there is little reason for ESP to come on. Hydroplaning to me does feel like braking due to increased resistance with water.

^ This! But ESP probably wasn't at work here...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWdFX...eature=related Most likely it was either the effects of pure hydroplaning or the other systems mentioned were activated.

Haven't tried to see if this method works on the GLK yet, but you can deactivate the ESP if you wish. Link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7ceK...eature=related

(MB) Experience how the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and its Electronic Traction System (ETS/4ETS) works: http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/manual...ience/esp.html

Note that on the 4MATIC is even "- more drive torque is also transferred to the wheel or wheels with traction".
