2012 GLK Handling and brakes in emergency!

I'm more sold than ever on Mercedes Benz and the quality and safety of their automobiles!
Over Super Bowl weekend, my wife and I were driving to San Diego for a Super Bowl party and to spend the weekend with family. We live in Ventura CA and SD is about 180 miles south of us. Anyone living in So CA knows the freeways can be crazy and very dangerous if you aren't always on alert.

While merging from the transition freeway 78 to the I-15 south, the traffic slowed down to around 60 mph in the merging lane, and I looked over to my left once I was on the I-15, to make sure it was clear to move to the next lane and then into the left diamond lane (car pool lane). When I did a car came shooting across from the diamond lane and into the lane next to me that I was pulling into. At the same time, the cars in front of me came to a near stop! I instantly jerked the steering wheel hard to the right and again back into and then out of my current lane and then right into the right open lane (2-car length)!

If it had been any other car or SUV it would have rolled over! The brakes and the all-wheel drive took over and outside of brakes screeching and a lot of sliding, it reacted like a car you would see in a move with a stunt driver! It took control so fast that I never had a chance to think about braking or re-braking like you would on a 2-wheel drive and all I could say when my wife asked me if I was ok was, "Damn what an car!" I've had 5 MBs in the last 13 years and I'll never buy anything else. There is no doubt in my mind that we would have rolled and possibly been killed if it hadn't been a MB 4W vehicle. Just wanted to share as I see threads on how they aren't as good as xxx brand--don't believe it! Test drive one and see for yourself.

It's spelled "brakes"... not "breaks".

LOL-typos abound after a 10 hour day! I'll edit the thread when I'm at a computer tomorrow-its time for a JD on the rocks now-

Glad to hear about this experience in an emergency.. considering all the "soft brakes" concerns out there.... Thanks!

Thanks! Sorry you had to be the test pilot. Reading your story made me want a JD too. I just happen to have some from our company Christmas party. I'm trying to finish it quickly. There is a bottle of Maker's Mark waiting patiently for some attention.
Totally glad that you, your wife and your GLK are all safe and unhurt. The chronic lane changers scare the stuffing out of me. Even when I am signalling a lane change, they often dive into my opening and cut me off. That is when I wish I had a James Bond style rocket launcher and blow the idiots off the freeway.
Cheers!

Wayne

SoCal freeways are cake compared to DC or even Manhattan NYC streets.
Now those are scary.

HA, HA--Truth is that So CA freeways are the safest freeways in the country. My theory is that when you have 7 Million cars on these freeways, at any given time during the day, you have to have some courtesy or you wouldn't make it to the next exit! Or maybe I've just had too much JD and just think everyone is courteous! LOL

I agree as well.. drivers here in DMV area are crazy..and I hate people driving 40 on 45 and 50 on 55/60 on the most left lane too. I actually miss driving in Cali...

In general I found the SoCal freeways are pretty good even with the traffic. You signal to merge and people actually let you in. Where I live it's the opposite. People actually speed up to close the gap.

Go1ndr, glad to hear everything turned out alright.

I am about to go out and play on the Houston Freeways. Something I avoid like the plague! Good luck to me!
