UMI No Traffic?

I had the UMI installed. But the option for traffic is greyed out. I asked the dealer they said it's not available with the command 20 system. Any ideas?

I think that you need Sirius radio to get traffic.

OK. Then I'm clueless. We have the full tilt COMAND system and traffic works. Of course I have to remember to have the NAV screen activated to see the traffic conditions. Two weeks ago I didn't and we got stuck creeping along on a major highway for a few miles until we could get off. I won't make that mistake again.

NAV+4 UMI still requires you live in an area where the RDS/TMC data is broadcast.

But this may be the reason why:

Sirius Select includes traffic. That is the basic package so maybe there are other issues.

Sirius Select
Over 130 Channels

World-class news plus local traffic and weather.
Good luck.
Thinking about this a bit more. There are a handful of Sirius channels that broadcast voice traffic reports. In my case, I have a channel for Phoenix-Dallas-Houston. Since I am in Houston, it's very lame. The graphic traffic information on the NAV screen is much better. Maybe that information is coming from the RDS/TMC system mentioned above.

It could be - according to that thread - that the Nav4+UMI uses a different 3rd party to get it traffic data; maybe even the free FM feed.

Whereas the traffic on the COMAND MMI is provided by Sirius.

Of course, this is a guess only & the OP may need to call MBUSA if the dealer can't answer to their satisfaction.

Regardless of where it comes from, the onscreen traffic display is a lifesaver. One of those things folks overlook, like the factory hitch, when they moan about the price. There are also written messages about road construction, detours, delays, etc. miles before you get to them. You do have to filter them in your brain because they aren't always on your route. Glad to have these hidden features.

I guess that is the most plausible reason. I live in baton Rouge, bigger than a town but not quite a city.

I love it! Always said the same about New Orleans.
FWIW, Knoxville, TN had great onscreen traffic information. We went through westbound on a Friday afternoon. The eastbound side of the interstate was stopped dead all the way through the city. Shown accurately on the screen in the GLK. Had we been going that way, we would have known in time to go WAY around the log jam.

Can you believe, as much of a technofile as I am, I still use experience & the local news station to guide me vs. the Sirius traffic option!

Did you sign up for traffic separately with Sirius? It takes a different signup and adds cost to your Sirius bill. It works in Albany NY even though there is no broadcast traffic for Albany.

If that is true, it is included in the 6 month freebie with a new purchase. We shall check into it as well. Thanks for the heads up.

MBNA109: Agreed. Except for those times when the local traffic report is a hundred yards too late to save you from a one hour round trip to the next exit. It happens.

The traffic on the Iphone maps is really good. We came up from the outer banks and the traffic updates on the Iphone seemed to be keeping up with us. Does it update from following cell phones? The Sirius seems a bit slower to respond to traffic changes
