Keyfob compatibility? (GLK vs. ML vs. other)

(Did a search and didn't see anything on this)

Went to the dealer yesterday to get the cost on a replacement keyfob and this was quote:

Key Fob $180
Metal key for the keyfob $15
Key fob programming fee: $85

If I have a used key fob for an ML/C/etc, can I use that to be reprogrammed for our GLK?

I think I heard that the keys cannot be re-programmed from one car to another; if that is so, a used one would not do you any good.

Not sure if they have already transitioned to the dealer programming but all the keys I have ordered for clients in my two years with MB have all been ready to use when they arrive from the distribution center. I know they are moving away from this but IIRC the transition is not until later this year.

I ordered a new keyless go key for the R two weeks ago and it already came preprogrammed from the distribution center in Texas. (hurray- no need to pay labor to program it!)

I was at the dealer recently and was told that a key from another Mercedes cannot be re-programmed. Part of me thinks (and a greater part hopes) that he is lying.

That's where I'll place my bet!

I've seen this in more than one location. Don't know if it works but it can't hurt to try if you bought the fob already.

I know it is for an older ML but I don't know if MB changes much for a lot of their programming.
