Brake Hold for 2013 GLK

Hey everyone,

I just got the new 2013, and I was curious if anyone else is having the same issue. I cant seem to activate the brake hold. The manual says when at a complete stop to apply the brakes and the "hold" light should pop up on the dash, but I cant seem to get it to work. I seem to remember it working on the car I test drove. Any advice?

Thanks

After breaking, push down even harder on the break pedal. When active, you should be able to see the word "HOLD" in your instrument panel.

This. Plus, it seems that if you press and release the pedal, then push again without moving, the hold will not activate.
Next time you stop, immediately after stopping, push HARD. Then you'll figure out how much pressure it takes and won't have to press as hard.

Yeah I think it is a bit of hit and miss too. What seems to work for me is after coming to a complete stop I will like double pump the brake and that seem to activate it as well.

Do you find that feature necessary in an auto trans vehicle..?

RobMande- I agree on the hit or miss. It worked some of the time yesterday. It's just nice to know that the feature is there.

rmfnla- just a nice thing to have. Is it a necessity, not really.. Is it cool to show off when passengers are in the car..absolutely.

With the Eco mode, it's nice. If you release pressure on the pedal, the engine starts.
With hold, at a long light, train, etc., you press and engage 'hold', and the engine stays off until you press on the gas.
You don't want to put it in park, because the engine starts.

It's also useful at the Starbucks drive-thru, engage hold and get your money out of your pocket, instead of putting it in park.

I imagine the engine starting in "Park" or when the seatbelt is disengaged, is to remind you that the the car is on, so you don't get out and walk away without shutting it off.

Interesting thread. I've noticed that the hold works every time I pull into my driveway (somewhat steep), after I apply the brakes. Every time I lift my foot off the brake pedal and move it to the gas pedal, the hold feature works like a champ.

I drive my 2012 GLk pretty gently the vast majority of the time, including braking. On the driveway, I just gently apply the brakes as the garage door is going up, then release and the car just sits there. However, I don't think it will just sit there forever. I've purposefully removed my foot from the brake pedal, but did not touch the throttle to see what would happen. The "hold" let go after a few seconds. Good enough for me.

The hold feature seems to be working without any conscious effort on my part, even with relaxed braking effort.

That would be the 'Hill Assist' feature,, which is separate from Hold. My 2011 C-Class has hill assist, and it was useful.

The "hold" function sets the brake and holds it indefinitely until either the brake is pressed and released, or the gas pedal is pressed.

Wait, this is in conjunction with an engine shut-off?

Yes.
Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town.

I think the reason for the "hold" function was specifically to work with the ECO engine shut off.

One more "feature" we didn't ask for nor do we need.

The HOLD functionality is a gimmick for sure. But Hill Assist is actually useful...unfortunately, 0.7 seconds response time is a bit too brief for my liking & I've experience a bit of roll back occasionally.

Personally, I like the Brake Hold feature and use it often in varying circumstances. Had I not wanted these "Mercedes like" features, I would have purchased a Ford Escape and saved almost 50% of my money.

I *DO* want it.
It exists as part of the ECO mode, which is one of the reasons I bought this vehicle. The ECO mode would be significantly limited in application without it.

Hmmm...I do think the MB GLK is well worth more than 50% even without the gimmicks.

Like I've said several time - some like to drive & some like to be driven...

...while countless more just want to ride.
ps: There is a brain dead BMW 328i appliance operator who can thank their lucky stars for the new Michelin tires and brakes on my XC70. Otherwise, they would have about half of my XC70 in their trunk. Where is the grenade launcher behind the fog lights when you need it?

If the Eco start turns off the engine that means the transmission is not spinning so no ability of the tranny to stop the vehicle from moving backwards on a hill so it would seem one needs the "brake hold feature".

Sounds like sticking to the basic 'blocking & tackling'!

Brake hold does not require ECO, but ECO really does need the brake hold function.
