Removal of console cover for 2013 and up GLK

I have looked at all data and in another forum where I'm also a member there is a sticky for removal of the console but no pics. Since I have limited pic access there vs here this are the pic instructions.

Remove the console cover gently. Didn't want to crack or mess up the leather trim hence put masking tape and used a butter knife to pry it open then a wide screwdriver to help pop it out.

Now get whatever dropped in there from the back. Use a sticky tool or a forcep to gently get it out. As for me. An AA credit card

Replace the cover the opposite way it came out. The rear part first then gently tap the front in place.

No such luck. My daughter put my wife's cc on top, turned a corner, and down it went. But not just inside the door slot, it dropped all the way to the bottom. I can actually see the previous owner has a CC down there as well, but I can't figure out how to remove additional stuff to get down there. There are two torx screws on either side of the slide rail for the top; they didn't do anything other than let me pull apart the rails enough to pull the flex door off. There are two torx screws below and to the outside of where the temp controller goes. I loosened them, but didn't see anything getting loose such that I could move it. There are also two larger torx bolts at the far rear behind where the flex door would close, but my 3/8" socket driver for my torx bits won't allow me to get to the angle I need to in order to try to take them out (will have to buy a torx "screw" driver just for this (assuming these bolts will allow me to pull out the unit (although it doesn't appear it will). So I'm at a loss as to how to get down underneath. Now that I've seen the PO's CC down there, I'm wondering what other treasures are down there with my wife's CC. Just no clue how to get farther than this. Any suggestions?

Buy a gooseneck clamp that locks to grab the CC esp if you can see it? Usually in used surgical supplies or if you work in the hospital borrow one to use.

Won't work. I can just see a small corner of the CC; no way it would come up that way eve if I had something that could go down and clamp on. Has to come out the same way it went in as far as I can tell. Just ordered a replacement CC....

Just recovered a memory disk that slid forward and out of sight...used a round tip knife to remove trim piece and gently pulled up from front of wood...came off as described above...thank you for the great pic and write-up...that's what these forums are all about!!

As another poster wrote above, I have a receipt stuck under the whole assembly. It looks like the door grabbed it and pushed it behind the assembly and then dropped underneath the console. I can see it, I just can't find anything small enough to get ahold of it. Further, I can't figure out how to take out the whole console.

Is there a way to take whole console assembly out?

ok so I was able to get the receipt that I could see out. Removing the ashtray assembly helped (10mm bolt under the rubber liner).

Only problem is, it was the wrong receipt. Doh!

Now I'm back to square 1. Thinking about trying to use the vacuum to see if I can pull it out where I can reach it with some forceps. The receipt is worth a few hundred bucks so its worth spending a little more time on.

The grabber above is flexible....just don't start pulling any wires

Thanks for the help. My wife hit the brakes and the CC was gone!

The faceplate on the thermostat controls is really very thin, like about 1 mm thick and has five plastic snaps across top and three across the bottom below the opening. After removing the trim cover and getting the card out, I glued a piece of black felt to the underside of the cover piece along the "front" (i.e., where the card had disappeared) just out of sight. I'm hoping that it might block up the slit enough prevent a repeat of the disappearing credit card.

Drilled through the top of inaccessible area

Following all instructions above, I carefully removed the louver door. Like taking a bicycle tire off the rim, I used a small screw driver to pry each slat out one at a time. Removing the torx screw on each side helped the slide guide give enough to get each slat over the top.

Now the flat plastic area most forward was revealed as the louver door was not in the way. Taking a power drill with a 1 inch wide bit (or similar), I drilled two holes adjacent/overlapping and created an area wide enough to get two credit cards, two receipts, and three business cards out. Combined routed out area got the items out by long nose pliers grabbing the shorter edges of the cards and pulling through the hole. Sticking a long skinny screw driver through area I could see the cards helped get them into position near the opening. A vacuum cleaner hose also helped get them closer to the opening. Was surprised all that came out.

I sealed the opening with duct tape and reinforced all edges of the taped area with electrical tape. The opening doesn’t hurt the integrity of the part and also the molded rubber mat snugly fits in the area so the compartment can be used. Can’t even sense there’s a small covered opening under the small mat as it fits so tight, the mat doesn’t move at all.

Also bought Heavy Duty Felt Pad tape from Hone Depot 1/2 in X 58 in peel and stick tape. I cut a piece the width of the louver door opening and stuck it along the top edge to close the critical gap where cards pass and disappear.

I buttoned it all up and the louver door slides nice with very little resistance. Now for a card to go under the area, it has to be deliberate.

I made a quick video today to show the removal of the console ... No edits ... so nothing fancy, but you get the idea ... It was over a year since the last time I had taken it apart and put it back in .. kind of forget how it went ... lol!
