50,000 miles to-fix items - please help

My 2010 GLK has reached 50000 miles, took it to the dealer yesterday, they gave me a long list to-fix items.
Do you all agreed to do it all? I understand safety is the most important for us on the road each day.
I need to know if they are MUST done items, Please advise
any comments are appreciated.

  • Battery $ 264
  • Cooling system flush $116– recommended for every 5 years 50,000 miles
  • Power steering flush $180 – due every 2 years 20,000 miles
  • Brake fluid flush $140– due every 2 years 20,000 miles (did it on 30,000 miles year 2013 June)
  • Transmission Fluid Flush $438 – due every 40,000 miles
  • Real differential Ale oil $93 -recommended at 50,000 miles

I would follow what your owners manual recommends.

Autozone can put a new battery in for about $100. If you didn't due the transmission fluid change at 40k, I would do that, although I would be tempted to find an independent shop as the dealer sounds high.

No way the power steering needs to be flushed every 2 years.

Brake fluid can probably go one more year (I do it every 3 years), although 2 years is recommended.

I would look at your owners manual as I didn't think the rear diff fluid or the cooling system flush were due.

First I would not replace a battery unless you're having problems with it. You might some day come out of a store and find you can't start the car because the battery died but unless they give you some positive sign of why it should be replaced, forget it. Maybe they somehow read voltage differential in cells which might be an indication to preempt a problem and avoid getting stranded somewhere. Why do they recommend that?

I'd question the cooling system flush also. If the liquid is clear, without rust or oil, not necessary though I do drain and flush mine about every 5 years. I sure wouldn't pay that kind of money to anyone to do it for me!

I've NEVER flushed a power steering unit and not sure I ever will.

There's merit to a brake system flush but certainly not at 20K miles. I've done it about 50K miles. I wouldn't pay for it unless I can watch what they do. Many merely suck the fluid in the reservoir out, replace that with new, then bleed the brakes if they feel like it. That's not a flush.

There's merit to the tranny flush but it's an awfully high price. I'd find someone else to do that.

I can't recall the last time I either changed or had the differential grease changed. Doesn't hurt, but for $93? Looks to me like somebody saw you coming.

Certainly nothing they've recommended can hurt anything but the pocketbook. I'd sure ask a lot more questions before doing anything they've recommended, and I'd also look for an alternative to do the work for a more reasonable price. That's outrageous!

Thanks for both,

They also quoted me 4 tires -Dunlop Grandrek Touring with price tag. 1376.The battery currently runs fine, never once gave me any indication. I think it is the age, I will change it in a few months. I put an average 10,000 miles a year, mostly on freeway. I was shocked when I saw the list.I didn’t mention they also wanted me to change the windshield wipers.... front and rear a total of 120. I may need to call around if there are some good dealer options around Dallas, north Dallas areas, please advise if you have any recommendations.Much appreciated!

You're bound to have some good, and honest, independents around Dallas. Google for them and then call to check prices and recommendations, the most convenient to you first.

Follow what is recommended in the owners manual, the A, B, C, services. If you have owned this car since new, then this is the way MB recommends it to be serviced. It does not have to be performed at a dealership. Brake fluid flush is a B service interval, every two years but uncertain about the other items as to the recommended interval. Transmission is to be serviced every 39.5K miles. P/S flush may or may not be in the book. It is a good idea as the system does not have a filter & the fluid does get contaminated. Saves the cost of possibly replacing a steering rack down the road which is important if you intend to own the car for a long time.

A gaggle of MB's
Frankly - the Battery is a optional choice -as other posters have highlighted before.

On the other list items - all solid stuff - so that you can get the best deal possible - and their dealer quotes for each service item is quite competitive - ask your Service Adviser about what would be covered if your purchased a Prepaid Service Pack - 2yr/20K $750 - or 3yr/30K for $975.

Depending on what they outline to you - a 2yr/20K or 3yr/30K might end up being a better total value - which would add other service items as well.

With this service - since it is over $150 - please understand your free Mercedes Roadside Assistance is extended 18 months from date-of-service.

2010 with 54k miles here since new.

If battery works, not sure why it should be replaced (I still have the original one).
Anit-freeze is good for 15 years/150k miles from what I read, but not bad idea to flush
Power steering flush...why?
I haven't heard of rear dif flush in non-AMG cars, but makes sense and price is low.

Tranny flush should be done.

Brake fluid should be flushed every 2-3 years

Do the battery if it is the original, transmission service should be done, and maybe rear differential oil. I suppose the brake fluid is a good idea as well.

Batteries have a finite number of charge/discharge cycles and five years is a long time for even the best batteries. They do not tolerate extreme temperatures well and could go out on an extremely hot or cold day. Why get stranded? However the quoted price of $264 is insane. As others on this forum have noted, Mercedes roadside service will replace it for around half that price.

This list is crazy. The battery in your GLK is not a $100 Autozone battery. It is an AGM sealed battery that is closer to $200 and should last you 5 years or more. I had a 2003 C Class with the original AGM battery in it. It should be load tested but you can get a good feel by letting the car rest with nothing drawing current for 15 minutes. If you test the voltage on the battery and it's around 12.6v or higher - you're probably OK.
There is a brake fluid test for moisture which should tell you it needs replacing. I had to replace mine at 80,000 miles.
The tranny fluid is every 30,000 miles and the power steering is only for problems or contamination. The coolant is long interval too but I'm not sure - maybe 100K.
Where is the wallet flush on this list?

Sounds like you need to find a local reputable independent mechanic you like.
Maybe they wanted your car back?

Battery is 6 years old now so it very well maybe close to being done.

So how does this brake fluid test exactly work? You have brake fluid sitting in lines/and ABS, and it really should be flushed every few years. ABS units are pricey to replace.
