engine mounts
hi all,
just curious, do you need to separate the engine from the tranny to replace the engine mount. local mech is saying this and not sure if he is just trying to make it soud a lot of work to jack up the labor cost more because of that. thanks folks

No, I've done them myself and the only things you need to remove are the alternator/compressor (just needs to be unbolted from the block) and both front axle shafts if your car is 4Matic. Unbolt the two mounts then lift the engine from under with a jack just enough so you can fit the new ones in.

Thanks sam p I was told the same thing but decided to hold the repair coz the labour charged Increased and they won't be able to get it done the same day. I will have to reschedule this

I replaced all 3 motor mounts (2 front and transmission) in December 2013. Only 24,000 miles on the odometer since the replacement. I have learned that I need to replace them again. I have no doubt about the competency or honesty of the mechanic. He said that he was not surprised and that it was highly unlikely that it had anything to do with my driving.
Has anyone else experienced such a short life for your motor mounts. I have a 2004 E55 AMG with 101,000 miles. It has an R1 RennTech package (if that has any bearing on this issue, which does not seem likely)

Easiest way to diagnose motors mounts is open the hood, have someone inside the car with it running, tell them to hold the brakes all the way dow, put it in drive and blip gas, if the engine moves up/down or sideways then your mounts are bad, especially if the engine looks like it wants to jump out of the engine bay. Another way to tell is put the car in drive and see if there are vibrations, then neutral and see if it goes away.
I had to replace all the mounts on my old E500 bit it did last 100k.
The issue is with the hydraulic design of the mounts, most cars with this design like my 08 Acura TL will cause failures much faster then normal, I would gladly use non hydraulic type for a little bit more vibration for longevity

The dealer quoted me almost $1,800, most of which is labor, and won't pitch in on the cost at all.
I will probably just do them myself since it doesn't look like too bad a job.
I have read too many accounts of this for it to be anything other than poor engineering.
