Mini Space Saver Donut Spare Tire for GLK?

Hello,

I'm new to the forum. I picked up a '15 GLK350 a few months ago, and getting more familiar with the vehicle. I find myself with a bigger smile in the mornings when I head off to work. One question I have is, is there a space saver 'donut' wheel that will fit on the GLK? I haven't come across any confirmation on mini-tire fitment. I have the stock inflatable unit, but I just wanted keep an additional donut in the back for any local mishaps. It would be easier for my wife to get rolling again without the steps needed with the collapsable spare. Understood, the traction control must be disabled when riding on the smaller tire.

Thank You in Advance!

Go with the Auto club of choice membership. I wouldn't want my wife changing a tire on her car anywhere. I tell her to call auto-club and stay indoors somewhere until they arrive. I think it is around $100-120 a year. With the number of distracted drivers on the road, who wants to change a tire on the side of a road.

I believe one MB dealer service a year ensures access to the free MB roadside assistance... (used to be totally free, but they added this clause)

The space saver tires were provided in Canadian cars with no run flats. They are available from MB. Believe the original supplier was (sp?) Vredstein. I have one courtesy of MB when my factory build was mistakenly built as a Canadian car with standard tires and I blew a tire when I hit a rock slide in the road on a remote highway. That's another story! Believe the cost 5 years ago was $375. I carry it when I'm traveling.

FYI, when we bought our 2013 GLK 350 a few months back I found the inflator was missing. Picked one up at Walmart and then found the bead wouldn't seal on the inflatable spare. Took it to a tire shop and he could the bead so it would seal. Left it inflated in the garage for a few days, deflated and then tested again with my inflator and it worked fine. Moral of the story is, check it out and make sure it inflates. But I agree, I wouldn't want my wife attempting this in any manner.

The OP said he had a '15 GLK350. Did they not come with a spare? If not, what is the stock inflatable he talks about? I thought that there was only space for a space saver like the Vredestein on the GLK350. Those of course inflate to full size, so no concern about the transmission.

No indication if he is in Canada. Or not. Could be a Canadian car with regular tires. There's no room in my spare tire well where the audio equipment goes. I strap mine vertically to left side of cargo bay. I don't think ANY US cars came stock with inflatable spare but I know there was a run on the inflatables as the new cars were being sold. With used cars who knows what previous owners have done.

My car had a factory mini-spare.

We are talking GLK350s here. If US GLK350s did not have a spare, what was the space below the cargo used for? Seems that at least some ( all? ) used it for the compact spare.

350's, 250's, 200's, all use the same body sheet metal. Equipment and accessories vary by market. Different countries are different markets and depend on that area's administrators in the MB system for specs. Impractical and costly to stamp different metal for that small space for different markets.

All? Where the basic specs for MB-USA call for run flats and no spare, and they also provide higher end audio which doesn't go to other markets, perfect space for amplifiers, etc. Good comparison is Canada whose cars are equipped differently than USA cars. They get spares standard equipment. Other markets do to.

So what's your point?

From MBUSA specs for 2015 GLK

Specifications:
GLK250 BlueTEC
Wheels 19" triple 5-spoke with Extended Mobility tires 19" triple 5-spoke (5)

GLK350
Wheels 19" triple 5-spoke

(5) Models with Extended Mobility tires are not provided with a spare tire.

(Extended Mobility = Runflat)

From anything I read about standard equipped US GLK 350s, they came with all-weather tires and included a compact spare. Same as in Canada. The OP no doubt has the spare as does JohnnyC and several other who posted earlier. Did GLK350s in USA ever not have a spare? I would be happy to learn from 350 owners who did not get a spare or a different MBUSA spec from the one above that I found on-line.

My question still is - what type of spare op (15glk350) wants to get if he already has the collapsible spare that came with his 2015 GLK350?

GLK350
I had a flat on my 2011 GLK350 a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night on a major interstate in Dallas. It was going to take MB 2 hrs to send someone out, my insurance company, the same length of time, AT&T service through my cell phone 1-1/2 hrs. I chose to drive on the tire (it was brand new by the way. Had just had a Michelin put on the day before at an NTB and it blew out. I heard it pop). The next day I called AT&T. The guy was there in in 10 minutes. When he took out the donut to put it on, It was damaged. It was balled up inside the tire. My point is, who wants to wait in the dark on a busy highway for someone to come out to change a tire. I would have done it myself if it had been daylight. Well, I would have attempted to but since the tire was damaged I would still have had to wait for a tow. And I am a 71 year female. And yes, I know how to change a tire. When I started driving my dad taught me how to change a tire and check the oil.

Did he know how the Space Master tire works? It is folded up inside itself on the rim. The air pump has to be used to inflate it and then it pops out and forms a full size temporary tire.

Demo here:
