cost for centrifuge cover replacement

My 2013 GLK 350 needs to have its centrifuge cover replaced, and my dealer quotes a labor cost of about $1,000. Is this reasonable?

Thanks!

Well, that is the term that they used in the quote. I could only google it, but do not feel sure if I really get what it actually is, because it seems that everyone is claiming that it is easy to replace even diy...

Looks like it is a oil separator. Used in emission system at top of valve cover. The Teflon valve can wear and need to be replaced. Called a centrifuge because it causes the oil air gas mixture from the crankcase to spin and throws the il drops against the side which then run back down into the engine. Part is only $22 to $67 depending on where you buy it. $1000 sound a little large.

That's way too much. MB San Antonio quoted me $359 to replace cover. It's an easy job so I did it myself. Cover is about $20.

same BS for my S550

My dealer sent me an email (after I had it in for an oil change) that I needed to replace the centrifuge cover for $285, it looks like a simple repair.

If it's like the 2011, it's not a hard job, but access and visibility are less than ideal. There are three screws attaching the centrifuge to the back of the engine that you need to remove, but there's very little room between the back of the engine and the firewall. Two top screws are easily accessible:

But the third one, on the bottom, requires an inspection mirror or feel to see and access:

So be prepared for some "wrenching by braille". Here is a comparison of old and new covers:

For a professional mechanic, this should be a 30 minute job, including a bathroom break. So anything above ~$150 for labor is gravy for the dealership.

I have a 2011 ML350, just got told by dealer that Centrifuge is leaking. ($355.95) Do you think it would be similar to fix diy? Does oil leak out when this is taken off? Not sure if there is a procedure.

That's the exact repair I did. Takes 30 min, Did you really mean $1038 or is there an extra digit there? That's beyond obscene. Come on by, I'll do it for you.

Sorry. I was just about to try to fix my post. lol. I looked at the wrong item. They quoted $355.95. I've replaced my spark plugs so I'm wondering if I can diy this.

Well that's a bit more tolerable. You should be able to do it yourself, depends if it's worth your time. I like to do things like this just to learn, so I do it out of principle. It's not too hard, and there are some additional parts you should replace once you're back there (I think a couple of plug seals), but the hardest part is that last third bolt that you can't see. If you have small hands like me, you can do it. If you're a sumo wrestler, it may be a challenge.

My shop , now former shop, charged me $685 which now I realize is a rip-off for my 2011 ML350.
Parts for $70 labor was $608.
This repair was needed after I had done an oil change at the shop. A day later my car started to smoke when I started it in the morning and it went away after a few minutes.
I took it back to the shop and they told me this was what was wrong. 13 plus years and this never happened to me after an oil change so I thought it was a little suspicious. it seemed too coincidental that right after an oil change and the oil part starts to fail.

My understanding (always subject to correction) is that oil separators on the 2013-on GLKs are a LOT harder to swap than the 2012 and older. It's a big job on the newer models, though the thought of spending next to a grand on this "maintenance item" makes my blood run cold.

OTOH, you really do want to swap this part out before it starts allowing too much oil to find its way into your intake manifold, gumming it up and eventually requiring replacement.

$1k still too much even at today’s prices. $125 at dealer parts counter. $600-$750 total at indie shop. Kind of a “stand on your head” job to DIY.

In the USA it’s a PCV system. They used to cost 8$ and take 30 seconds to replace , now some genius put it at the back of the motor. Why not the front ? For a 13 it took my mechanic 5 hrs. You should test it also by seeing if there is vacuum at the oil fill cap, if it pulls down much use a vacuum gauge to measure the amount. I don’t remember what it should be, but mine was pulling more than it should . Buy a genuine part as they fail at the gasket. FCP euro lifetime warranty
