Rear Differential exploded 2011 GLK350

On the 20th of December experienced bang sound and loosing power - dealer advised on the 22nd our rear differential "exploded". We have 112K on it, have had it serviced and it's been a great vehicle. Dealer is stating it's $3800 to replace the rear differential. Open a case with MBUSA and they have been in discussions with the dealer. We are driving a loaner, what is realistic to expect to hear back from the dealer? We have a 2014 GLK250 Blue tech and 2016 GLE350, have been driving Benz since 1997. Any suggestions besides paying outright the $3800? Thanks.

I would get prices from independent shops tow it, and buy a used differential, it should cost a total under 1000, dealers are rip offs

I appreciate the advice, haven't heard from MB or the dealer yet. Checking out independent shops.

What happen with Mb and the 3800?
if you do get your own differential contact Fcp Euro and have them send you the gaskets and new oil, that will likely save you even more, and you will know you got the right stuff.

I have not heard from M-B, we have a service loaner and have not heard from the dealer either. Have sent emails and left VM’s.

I guess I don't understand what MBUSA or the dealer would be expected to do for you for a 10 year old vehicle with 112k miles on it. What do you think they should do for you?

I think 3800 is a fkn rip off, go buy a used diff off eBay , install might be 2-300, you might get the whole job done for 499$. Yea you got a mb loaner, now they have your glk, call now to find an independent shop that will swap it out, order the diff.

$3,800 is insane for that car. The whole car is only worth a bit more than twice that.

Bill, I recommend you don't waste your money at the stealership. If you had warranty it would be a different issue. There's nothing unique about a rear diff on a Benz, so a good independent Euro shop should be able to fix it for less than half what the stealer is charging.

Even with paying for a tow out of the stealership and into an Indy shop you will be coming out ahead.

I wouldn't authorize any work and just get it out of there. They're probably trying to figure out what kind of lowball trade-in offer they could make you so that you'd swap the GLK for a new car. Don't fall for it.

We have owned several M-B’s, we had them serviced and we plan to buy another one. Had it serviced and the differential failed - why wouldn’t I ask.

I have lined up a tow service, located a reputable independent shop with a quote for 1500. GLK is in great shape - doesn’t matter if it’s 10 years older. Haven’t heard from MB or dealer. Still have the loaner - plan to ask if they have a goodwill adjustment as we’ve had 10 MB SUV’s since 98. No adjustment move on - go with indie.
Thank you all for the feedback and advice

Received a good will adjustment on the rear differential , was told the front differential has a leak. $2200 to replace. Isn’t unusual for the rear and front differentials to fail at the same time. We’ve put 112K miles on it or about 12K a year. ARe there any TSB’s or threads on differentials failing ? Than you for the advice.

Since when do you replace for 2200 a differential leak? Sounds like a scam

I’m taking it to an indie next week for his opinion. Is it common after 100K miles for the differentials need repaired or replaced?

No it’s not common, go on eBay , there are maybe 100 for sale for a few hundred $ from totaled glks , if there was demand the price would be 4x higher. But a leak should be easily fixable, if not buy a used unit.

It very labour intense when it comes to replace differential. I believe it has to remove the axle. Depends how serious the leak is, just replace the fluid more often and over filled little bit. Mine front diff is leaking, but not serious at all. I now planned change my diff oil every two years

What’s important is how much of a leak it has, it could be just wet seals, and a dealer that isn’t honest about what it needs
