Major engine issues

Recently took my 2014 GLK 250 (~89,000 kms) on a road trip. Check engine light came on and I noticed SIGNIFICANT performance issues. From a stopped position, the car takes forever to get up to highway speed and sputters along the way. Once at highway speed, even if i floored it, the car barely accelerates. It eventually gets to my desired speed, but is dangerously slow to do so. Once I got back from the road trip, checked the codes and got the following:
  1. P0299 - Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost
  2. P0171 - System Too Lean Bank 1
  3. P056E - Cold Star Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Control 'A'
  4. P244B - Diesel Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Too High Bank 1
This is really concerning. One thing I should note: In April, I brought the car to the dealer for the BlueTec Field Measure recall/settlement. I don't know if any of the work done impacted the engine, but thought it was worth mentioning. I did notice that the car would jerk significantly (felt like a downshift) at low speed when I let off the accelerator right after getting the car back in April (didn't notice that before), but did not notice the above-mentioned performance/engine issues for the 3 months since the BlueTec settlement work was done.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Reading up on those error codes, seems like this is going to be expensive as hell to fix.

Probably the inter cooler boost pipe that always tears. Very common and relatively inexpensive fix. Lots of info on it on this forum with photos and part numbers.

Thanks! Hopefully that will address the other fault codes too.

Your problem might be under warranty since the settlement is done on your car. Lot of parts are covered.
If not, easy one hour job to do. From under the car, remove the front shield and you will get access to the hose. Two flat screw driver is needed to unlock each clips and your done. Doing so check for the metal frame part that is rubbing and digging an hole that might be the cause of your problem. Cut mine with a metal saw blade.

I will find out soon if its covered, but if not, I just found this video that does a good job walking through the repair. As you said, seems relatively easy.

+ 1,435 votes for the intercooler boost pipe.

FYI, the dealership techs are supposed to follow specific protocols of diagnosis depending on the fault code(s) present, and from my personal experience, they NEVER even touched the intercooler boost hose in question. Instead, they tested the wastegate controller and replaced that (for free, because it didn't fix anything, and because it was after the AEM work had been performed, so pretty much everything is now covered).

I knew it was the boost pipe and even told them to check it. Made 2 separate trips to the dealer after they "fixed it" only to have the same code pop up on the way home (I live 45 min from the closest MB dealer).

Once home, I crawled underneath and disconnected the hose, found not one, but 2 separate tears in it. Wrapped it in electrical tape to hold me over until the new arrived. $120 and 30 minutes of my time instead of multiple aggravated visits to the dealership.

FYI #2: techs hate being told what the problem is, especially by owners who typically don't know much. But press your point repeatedly: check the driver's side intercooler boost hose. Don't just visually look at it, disconnect it, handle it, turn it over, squeeze it here and there and you will see at least one tear in it.

Good luck.

There's definitely a tear in the drivers side intercooler hose. Now to see if the dealership will cover...

Good job!!! You must be an happy camper right now thinking that it will be expensive as hell to fix the problem an now finding out that it will only cost you at worst $150. What an happy ending. MBWorld forums is so helpful sometimes. Keep us informed.

Dealer probably won't fix that under warranty. Considered a wear item. Go online and order one, about $130 if you look around. Takes longer to get to it than it does to change it out. One of the easiest fixes you will ever do. Last time I changed mine out I took a grinding burr and got rid of the two fins that cut into it.

It's likely that the hose may be considered "wear and tear" but because it clearly affects the powertrain, I'd fight to have it fixed for free under the AEM warranty. If not, it's definitely an easy DIY repair.

Update: dealer fixed the charge air hose for free under the Field Measure warranty. You might get a service advisor who isn't familiar with the coverage, but charge air hoses are covered even if they weren't replaced as part of the Field Measure fix. Thanks for everyone's input and help, this forum rocks!
