For Bosch parts like cam and crank position sensors, the Bosch part number is on the sensor. Just look up that part number on your favorite online supplier and compare to the one in the MB box. FCP Euro and Pelican Parts will have both.

Also - Mercedes now has online replacements called Star Parts that are discounted from the standard MB parts list, sometimes significantly. Example: M271.860 water pipe (common failure) - Star Part $85; - parts counter walk-in price $188. Packaging is different but both have the same MB part number molded into the part.

Yea, I'm from the same camp. I've been diy wrenching for 50+ years (rebuilt 1st motorcycle at 14, and rebuilt first car at 16). In all that time, I've never ordered parts from the dealer, except in very rare instances where it was highly beneficial to use manuf spec parts. Have no doubt saved thou$and$ !

But everyone has their own comfort level.

Of course MB doesn't make parts such as sensors.

Do not buy electrical parts from a source that is not a dealer. Resist the temptation to rationalize oneself in a different direction.

Reading through this thread is a bit heartbreaking.
https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-c...-rattle-4.html
Seems the course of events are:
Startup rattle from chain slap due to bad tensioner or check valve behind tensioner.
Then you get the camshaft position code
And it's probably going to be a cam adjuster or two.
Vice grips time I'm guessing..

It’s not necessary. Choose as you like and report back.

@GLKwanter
Have you considered doing the "remove front cam cover and turn engine with breaker bar" test?
.

Some partially useful information and video content along with truly annoying presentation.

I kind of liked the "this isn't the MB way do to it, but it works and doesn't require a $$$$ tool" parts of the presentation. All in all, I watched the entire video just because I was learning some good stuff about the engine (though the 272 in my 2011 is a little different).

Certainly worth a watch and I also appreciate alternative methods and use of non MB tools but... still painful to watch/listen to, for me.
